With its jaw-dropping gilded ceiling, arched windows & mirrored walls, The Criterion is one of London’s most glamorous-looking restaurants, hence its allure for tourists & business
lunchers. But, handsome is as handsome does, & the place doesn’t always deliver. Classic brasserie-style dishes such as tournedos Rossini & French onion soup are listed alongside
Italian-accented offerings of beef carpaccio & gnocchi with tomatoes, basil & mozzarella – all of which are prepared competently. The wine list is as conservative as the menu, but is easy
to navigate & offers something for everyone. Service, however, draws criticism: staff seem to be rather too relaxed, & waiting times can be protracted (even when the place is half-empty).
In short, despite appearances, The Criterion ultimately lacks glitter.
