Square Meal Review of The Clove Club ?

Best Restaurants - Shoreditch - WinnerConfidently entering its second year at Shoreditch Town Hall, The Clove Club has already netted a Michelin star for its exploration of unusual British ingredients – and earned resounding applause from our readers. The repertoire has been extended since opening, with the buzzy bar (decorated with charcuterie) now offering large plates and small: pigeon sausages with greengage ketchup, say. Guests in the spartanly attired dining room choose from daily changing five- to nine-course menus (from £55). Chef Isaac McHale cooks in clear view, sending out such joys as the renowned buttermilk chicken on pine needles. Thin, silky raw scallop with crunchy hazelnut, clementine and Périgord truffle makes a heavenly follow-up, before dishes starring pollock and venison. Unlisted extras keep arriving, our favourite being a glass rinsed with 1908 Madeira and topped with duck consommé. A dessert of subtle pepper ice cream topped with a carbonated lemon mousse is zingy, fizzy, delightful. To accompany, we’d recommend the £45 wine-pairing option. Food of such quality deserves it.

  1. I have previously reviewed The Clove Club on Agent Restauranteur – (See The Clove Club (Bar) – London EC1V) – however my second visit was so spectacular I felt it unjust not to share what the main dining room at The Clove Club has to offer. It’s nothing short of a culinary delight.

    Arriving a little too early to go straight to our table, my guest and I settled ourselves down on the tall stools by the bar, and were happily sipping on glasses of English Rosé Champagne (sparkling wine) within moments of catching the barman’s eye. Despite knowing that we would soon be enjoying a five-course dinner menu, I could...

  1. Making a last minute reservation at one of the hottest restaurants in town is usually a stressful affair; countless re-dialling, minutes of hold music and finally an offer of 5:30pm or 10pm. Not so at Shoreditch Town Hall’s newest resident bar and restaurant. (The fact that it was a Tuesday and I was more than happy to sit in the bar may well have played in my favour.)

    Nonetheless, I found myself, that very evening dining at The Clove Club...

    The Celeriac :: The Clove Club, Shoreditch

    The Clove Club has recently opened in Shoreditch Town Hall, and you should go as soon as you can. In the kitchen is one half of Young Turks, chef Isaac McHale. He’s the chap who used to dish out delicious stuff above the Ten Bells pub...

    Samphire and Salsify :: The Clove Club, Shoreditch

    Located in the Shoreditch Town Hall, the Clove Club is the second restaurant from the chaps behind Upstairs at the Ten Bells. I’ve been meaning to visit ever since it opened but it somehow slipped by me, so I was really excited for our dinner.

    We were seated in the dining room, where only a set menu was available, priced at £55 for eight courses. We could have chosen the bar area which serves an a la carte menu but we wanted to do the whole kaboodle and get the full experience...

    Fd Over LDN :: The Clove Club Climax

    This is one clove club that won't leave your mouth numb, but after this meal you'll still be drooling. Taking permanent residence in the beautifully restored Shoreditch Town Hall is The Clove Club, set up by 'St.Vibes' after their successful stint (still ongoing) in Upstairs at The Ten Bells. With reviews from 'Upstairs at..' still scintillatingly superlative it seemed a no brainer to book in for their new place before it became impossible to get a table. The Clove Club is split up into 2 areas: the bar, with a great selection of beers, wines and bar food, and then the restaurant itself with open kitchen serving up...

  1. I've been thinking of how to open this post about The Clove Club. About how it all started 3 years ago with three very talented chefs, and how I've intently followed their progress through a variety of popups that they have done. It would be an understatement to say that I've been a fan of their work. I feel a little sad that there is just Isaac McHale left of the original three Young Turks, but thankfully the food is as great as ever. Partnering up with co-collaborators of their stint at the Ten Bells, the Clove Club was born...

  1. The best meal of the year and inexcusably overlooked by the Michelin Guide

    I encountered a fellow travelling Brit with some interesting views on food during my recent jaunt around Jordan. Although he had a broad palate, this didn’t extend to Modernist cuisine, especially multi-course tasting menus. ‘Artsy fartsy’ ‘nouvelle cuisine’ wasn’t ‘proper food’ he contended. Like all articulate debaters secure in their well-reasoned positions, he wouldn’t brook any argument to the contrary. This unfortunate culinary blindness means he’ll never experience the pure joy of eating at The Clove Club, but that merely makes...

  1. The opening of The Clove Club earlier this year was one of the most eagerly awaited restaurant launches of 2013. It’s the combined effort of former Ledbury chef Issac McHale, and the pop-up maestro duo of Daniel Willis and Johnny Smith who ran the hugely successful Upstairs at Ten Bells. The menu is ambitiously refreshing, and focuses on the use of fresh, seasonal British ingredients. Home for The Clove Club is The Shoreditch Town Hall which has been turned into a bar area at the front, and a dining room at the back with an open plan kitchen. The space is light, airy and decorated with a minimalistic approach. It’s...

    Lady Rhubarb :: The Clove Club, Shoreditch

    From the lads behind Upstairs at The Ten Bells, The Clove Club is their latest and first permanent London fixture. Located in the historic Shoreditch Town Hall, they have fitted out a front bar and a separate dining room. It’s ambitious, youthful and everyone’s talking about it.

    A much larger dining room and open kitchen makes the experience a little less intimate than their Ten Bells gaff, nevertheless the open space, high ceilings, wooden tables and blue tiles give an almost boarding school diner feel that works. The acoustics need a little tweaking, or maybe I am just getting old!...

    SamTheFoodFan :: The Clove Club

    I absolutely loved Upstairs at the Ten Bells when I was there last year and when I heard that Isaac McHale (one of the chefs from Upstairs at the Ten Bells and the Young Turks supper club before that) was setting up a restaurant, I just knew I had to try it.

    The Clove Club is situated in the former Shoreditch Town Hall, once thought of as the “grandest Vestry Hall in London” and there are still signs of its former self everywhere. The large windows and high ceilings make the restaurant feel much larger than it actually is and the stripped back décor may seem stark to some, but The Better Half and I absolutely...

  1. We are massive fans of the Young Turks (a couple of young chefs with some highly coveted experience and credentials). When we learned they were planning to open a new restaurant in Shoreditch, called the Clove Club, we were on it faster than Usain Bolt sprints the 100m...

    Wrap Your Lips Around This :: The Clove Club

    The Clove Club has fast become hot property in the restaurant world. Although a set menu is imposed in the main dining room, an a la carte is available in the bar which offers many of the same dishes without the restriction. The freedom of choice is a nice surprise, and the evening starts amiably enough with an order of cod chitterlings (intestines). An effervescent waiter describes them so favourably that to spurn his advice would be an injustice. The chitterlings are nothing that you would expect from a fish; instead they have a padded, rich texture similar to that of sweetbreads. Seeming like a thing that is best...

    sexdrugsandbaconrolls :: The Clove Club

    The Clove Club, situated in Shoreditch Town Hall is the epitome of East London restaurant. Located in an old, decadent building, the restaurant is designed with simplicity in mind. It has plain stripped wooden furniture, a dingle tea light candle for decoration and a bare bar with hanging herbs, lavender and some chintzy old fashioned champagne glasses...

  1. Space and decor: as their minimalist, sleek website will tell you, at The Clove Club you can eat both at the bar – an informal space with a stylish array of reclaimed wood tables around a metallic structure for the counter; or in the main dining room, a high-ceiling quite bare space livened up by the open kitchen with its beautiful tiled surfaces. It is all very East London and studiously put together, but not in an “in your face” way – say like in Meat Mission- and threads the border between achingly cool and authentic pretty well...

    Culinary World Tour :: Putting love in The Clove Club

    Up the stone steps of Shoreditch town hall and in to the high ceilinged spartan old school space of the bar where we were served a cocktail that was somewhere between a negroni and a glass of Rose wine, served straight up in a coupe glass. Perfect aperitif...

    Edesia Is Hungry - Food of the Gods :: The Clove Club

    The Clove Club  is the newly opened venture from the team behind Upstairs at the Ten Bells, Clove Club and various other pop ups in East London. Located in Shoreditch Town Hall, lunch was served in the bar at the front, a plain but comfortable space based around a central bar area. Only a lunch menu was available, offering a number of starters and 3 mains, a beef dish, a hake dish and a vegetarian option. The starters included a number of vegetarian dishes too.  Bread and salami's plates are also available.We started with a cocktail, an orange based brandy spritzer for my wife and a blend of tequila, mezcal and agave...

    The Hedonist :: The Clove Club – Review

    The Clove Club is the love child of chef Isaac McHale, a chef who first came to prominence as one of the trio of ‘Young Turks’ who first hit the culinary scene with their popup above The Ten Bells pub. His latest venture is the The Clove Club which is situated in the former Shoreditch Town Hall.

    The room has high ceilings, white walls and wooden floors and tables with McHale cutting a burly bespectacled figure at the pass. There is a separate bar area offering a simplified menu but I chose to go for the non-negotionable five course tasting menu (£55) that somehow morphed into an eight course feast. Unusually...

Isaac McHale

Isaac McHale’s culinary journey began with a job at his local fishmongers in Glasgow, followed by one at the city’s Stravaigin restaurant. The chef has also worked in the kitchens of Noma, Tom Aikens and The Ledbury, but it was only through his pop-up appearances with the Young Turks collective that he began to make waves. Following a residency at the Ten Bells pub, he opened the Michelin-starred Clove Club in 2013.
