Housed in a remarkable building with a huge glass extension that could have been inspired by the Louvre Pyramid, The Bird Cage occupies the stone-flagged courtyard of an old Victorian cotton mill
and fishing net factory (complete with a runway-like water feature) in the Edinburgh satellite of Eskmills. As an all-day venue catering for tourists and locals alike, it offers a mixed bag of
dishes from the global larder – from black pudding and haggis spring rolls, charcuterie boards and Caesar salad to fajitas, vegetable tagine, deep-fried macaroni cheese or chicken curry with Bombay
potatoes. The place is also known for its special deals – martini afternoon teas, steak nights (Wednesdays), Sunday brunch, kids’ menus and more besides. Otherwise, lounge on a chesterfield and sip
cocktails under the grand neo-classical cupola in the adjoining bar.
