This basement beneath the old Borough Market Trustees Building (circa 1897) was once used to store unripe bananas, but it now does duty as a neighbourhood restaurant that feeds off the foodie
stalls next door. On Saturdays you can even ‘eat what you see’: if you check the menu and buy what you need from the market, the kitchen will cook most dishes for £15 a head. At other times, the
repertoire is a seasonal run through the likes of pan-fried chicken livers with crispy bacon and poached duck egg, fillet of sea bass with fennel purée, wheatgrass dressing and bay gem or beef
cobbler with clapshot followed by, say, apple crumble with hazelnut and custard ice cream. The food is supported by a good clutch of bottles supplied by Boutinot Wines.
