Squaremeal Review of The Balcon ?

Sitting neatly at the cross-section between tourist-land and serene St James’s, The Balcon is a place for daytime deal-making and night-time romance. Matt Greenwood (ex-Blixen, Caravan) now heads the kitchen, steering things deftly away from ‘hotel restaurant’ (the Sofitel is attached) to dining destination – whether for breakfast, weekend brunch, lunch or dinner. He has also trendied up the menu, adding touches of sumac here, a sprinkle of yuzu there. Pan-fried snails with chorizo and sweet-potato purée is the best starter. For mains, both the lamb with pearl barley and cavalo nero, and the crispy sea bream with laverbread beurre blanc and samphire are triumphs of classical cooking: pair them with glasses of Wairau River Pinot Noir and Languedoc Picpoul de Pinet, respectively. The food is respectable, if not entirely memorable, yet unfortunately the atmosphere doesn’t quite match the quality of the cooking. Nevertheless, Greenwood has made a promising start.

    Tiki Chris :: The Balcon Sofitel St James Hotel

    All the right points were hit seemingly with prescience during my recent dinner at the Sofitel St James Hotel’s Balcon resulting in one of the better restaurant experiences of my year thus far.
    In many ways, The Balcon’s dinner menu appears as though it were written just for me – almost eerily so in fact. A starter course of pan-fried snails with chorizo, sweet potato pur&e, oloroso jus, and hazelnuts (&11)? That’ll do just fine thank you – and how did Chef Matt Greenwood manage to read my mind for a perfect way to commence a meal? Ditto on the roasted hake fillet, with ratatouille, green olive tapenade, and shellfish...

The private dining room at The Balcon offers the perfect setting for a business or private event. Flooded with natural light, the private dining room is separated by silk curtains, offering an exclusive and intimate area whilst giving the opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of the French brasserie. Open all year round for lunch and dinner, the private dining room can accommodate seven to 20 guests. It is also available for breakfast meetings, afternoon tea and special occasions. For smaller meetings or larger gatherings, Sofitel London St James also has a selection of 12 versatile event rooms.
