From the outside, passers-by might mistake The Abingdon for a boozer, but these days, real ale and darts have been replaced by piano jazz, floral sofas and other trappings of a buzzy neighbourhood gastropub/wine bar. Only the battered wood floor remains from its previous life, with high-backed leather stools and dining booths now forming the backbone of the swanky interiors. The place attracts a hard core of chichi Kensington locals who are happy to shell out for, say, slow-cooked egg with chorizo and home-dried tomato or home-smoked salmon with wasabi mousse, pickled beets and apple salad followed by wild mushroom risotto with vanilla and port reduction, a steak from the Bertha oven or tandoori chicken suprême with spiced Puy lentils. The kitchen clearly knows its stuff, service is “easy-going” and a judicious pick from the global wine list needn't break the bank.
