Tate is renowned for its solid in-house catering, & this bright daytime cafe-restaurant attached to the Liverpool gallery is no exception. Set in a converted warehouse with a glass frontage
overlooking Albert Dock, the light-filled room & its simple white furniture provide a neutral backdrop for the cafe’s distinctive centrepiece – garlands of technicolour acrylic glass streaming
out from the middle of the ceiling like a modern-day maypole. Staff are equally bright, though service can suffer during busy weekend lunchtimes; luckily the food doesn’t demand formality. An
appealing selection of light options such as lemony potted shrimps with sourdough toast, heartier mains including a nourishing stew of chorizo dumplings & chickpeas, & homemade desserts is
equally handy for a quick pit-stop or a sit-down lunch. The wine list has been selected by the Tate’s excellent sommelier, Hamish Anderson.
