From the outside, this creeper-clad 15th-century coaching inn looks unremarkable, but the refurbished interiors tell a different story. Low beams, timbers & hand-pulled local ales set a
staunchly traditional tone in the bar, while the dining room adds sleek, modern good looks courtesy of a copper ceiling, light-oak furniture & leather seating; there’s also a bright
conservatory overlooking the terrace & garden. Daytime bar menus deal in crowd-pleasing pub classics, while the restaurant ratchets up the modern British action with the likes of grilled sea
bass fillet with Colchester oysters, crushed potatoes, wilted kale & a watercress sauce, or comforters such as local Conisbee’s sausages with savoy cabbage, bacon & mash; seasonal game also
puts in an appearance (red-legged partridge with creamed white beans, roasted garlic, sautéed leeks & shallot sauce, say). Wisley’s horticultural delights are nearby, so the pub’s stylish
bedrooms are a bonus for gardening fans.
