Dreamed up by funky young chef (and inveterate Twitter joker) Gary Usher, the Sticky Walnut is “the definition of a local high-street restaurant” in a terrific location not far from Chester. Gary “puts his heart into the business”, matching the quirky vibe with “reasonably priced” food that absorbs influences from the Med and beyond – not surprising since his mentors include Jamie Oliver and Angela Hartnett. The eponymous nut pops up in salads, superb breads and suchlike, while the menu spans everything from Jersey royals with octopus and orange to roast duck breast with char-grilled Hispi cabbage, hazelnut purée and caramelised peaches or fillet of brill with baby artichokes, confit potatoes, sauce vierge and wild garlic – top ingredients expertly cooked “without any gimmicks or distractions”, noted one reader. Chateaubriand is perfect if you’re in the mood for sharing, while satisfying desserts might offer anything from pear and almond tart with cassis sorbet to ginger parkin with toffee sauce and yoghurt sorbet. “Unpretentious” service hits just the right note, the mood is confident and there’s a well-spread wine list too.

    Nomface :: Sticky Walnut, Chester

    We finally made it to Sticky Walnut one Friday night. Being based in Chester it is out the way for us being south of in-between Manchester and Liverpool. With Mr Nom working in Wrexham one week he suggested we make a booking. However with it being just after rush hour on a Friday evening it was quite a horrendous drive from Manchester whilst Mr Nom cantered in from nearby Wrexham.

  1. My first proper blog post, and what better way to start than the Sticky Walnut in Hoole (nr. Chester), currently one of Cheshire’s most talked about restaurants. I must admit that I was a latecomer to the Sticky Walnut and only heard about it last year through a friend. After checking out the menu online I added it to the list of places to visit.

  1. I’m already slightly biased towards Sticky Walnut, before I even begin. I like them, I like their work ethic, I like how they do things, and this was long before I visited. And I like them so much that when their crowdfunder for their second restaurant, Burnt Truffle appeared on my timeline, I contributed.

    As part of the crowdfunder, different people got different rewards. Mine was a lunch for two, three courses, and this was, selfishly, the whole reason for our trip to Chester.
