Readers finally seem to have warmed to this Mediterranean-themed venue from restaurateurs Chris Corbin & Jeremy King: it’s ‘so different’ from its precursor The Wolseley but, despite playing
second fiddle in the popularity stakes, is reckoned by many to be ‘at least as good’. For most, the menu’s gutsy, punchy flavours have proved a hit. Deep-fried soft-shell crab with tarragon
mayonnaise, pappardelle of Gressingham duck, & fish stew, are among dishes that have recently impressed from the weekly changing menu. The surroundings draw a more mixed response: well-spaced
tables are appreciated for working lunches, but the ‘very corporate’ business-lounge feel is not to everyone’s taste. There are no dissenters when it comes to the ‘precise’ service, however:
‘attentive but not intrusive’ staff ‘will do anything & everything to make the experience better’. Overall, St Alban is ‘an absolute pleasure’ – & good for pre-theatre, too.
