What was Battersea old stager Ransome’s Dock is now in the hands of Johan and Elsa De Jager – a seasoned husband-and-wife team who have transformed the slightly stark, whitewashed warehouse into an all-day venue delivering “some of the best local and fresh food south of the river” (according to one fan). The menu reflects the chef’s experience working in restaurants such as Fifteen and The River Café, so expect an abundance of ingredients-led Italian flavours and artisan wood-fired dishes on the menu – from buffalo mozzarella with ‘nduja, tomato and focaccia to squid-ink spaghetti with mussels, red mullet and crab bisque or grilled lamb with caponata and spiced ricotta. The onglet steak with chimichurri is “phenomenal”, and readers also like the side orders including a “pleasantly minty” cabbage slaw. Portion sizes are “fine” so you should be OK for, say, a chocolate pot with spiced croûtons. Source’s cooking is clever, considered and carefully curated, we just wish the space was a little more comfortable throughout.
