Squaremeal Review of Six Portland Road ?

Two key players from 2008’s ground-breaking newcomer Terroirs have moved west and opened a restaurant in swanky Notting Hill. Affable front man Oli Barker and head chef Pascal Wiedemann already have a hit on their hands, with locals lapping up the honest, well-priced modern cooking and the laid-back atmosphere. Simple-sounding dishes are given an extra edge of flavour and imagination, so mackerel arrives with a tangle of monk’s beard and blood orange; mozzarella is teamed with cime di rapa, chilli and breadcrumbs. Likewise, thick slices of smoked salmon come with fresh bread and crunchy celeriac rémoulade, while an intensely meaty pork chop is served with salsa verde, lemon and wilted radicchio. To finish, dive into sinfully delicious chocolate mousse with bitter cherries, or smooth-as-silk pannacotta with Yorkshire rhubarb and biscotti. Plates of Italian charcuterie, almonds and olives provide snacking options. The ground-floor site has an open kitchen, bar, standard seating plus a long sharing table with a sunny west-facing terrace. The wine list is another forte: a clever mix of natural and traditional labels, many from trail-blazing Les Caves de Pyrene.

    Date night with the hubby. Actually, what am I saying? Firstly, since the children flew the nest quite a few years ago, the two of us go out so regularly and so enjoyably, that times apart are rarer than times together. Secondly, the word ‘hubby’ is not one I ever use; it reminds me too much of a family anecdote.
    My mother was German. She spoke good school English, so after WW2 she worked as a court interpreter for the British Allied Forces in Germany and, because she was a most attractive young woman, she was frequently also asked along to various officers’ functions and parties.
