Square Meal Review of Shanghai Blues ?

The oriental glamour of old Shanghai sets the tone at this “surprisingly cool” Chinese eatery, where black lacquered wood and delicate orchids make a smart setting for business lunches. Lights are dimmed for sultry soirées in the evening, with live jazz on Friday and Saturday nights. The “excellent” dim sum is a real draw; our favourites include ‘tai chi’ dumplings, featuring two-tone squid-ink pastry stuffed with rich duck and preserved vegetables, and char siu bao: fluffy steamed buns filled with sweet barbecued pork. Classic aromatic duck comes with “an ample supply of pancakes and lots of nice crispy skin”, and the extensive à la carte also offers lobster with fragrant basil and lemongrass or spicy ‘Shanghai devil’ lamb. Signature oriental cocktails, well-chosen wines and authentic teas complete the package. Previous gripes about service appear to have been ironed out, with readers praising “prompt and polite” staff.

  1. My friend Abi, wanted me to suggest a few places for afternoon tea and dim sum. Shanghai Blues came to mind; I have heard many things are the fabulous décor inside. She wanted a place to cater for over 10 people and what better way to do a birthday lunch then to demolish dim sum on a Sunday.

The venue is sophisticated fine dining experience just off from Holborn station, split into 5 areas. Once you step inside the electric blue, dim reception you be wowed over by the spectacular traditional Shanghai teahouse era deco...

Shanghai Blues is a fine dining Chinese restaurant located in Holborn and is the perfect place for a corporate diner or for big groups of friends. A mezzanine area gives you the option of having a private area too, whilst you enjoy live jazz on Saturday evenings. Classy and chic, the atmosphere is made cosy by the dark wood and the ’20s Chinese style...

  1. I was having one of those crazy post-holiday work weeks and needed a dose of my friend A. She knew I was missing Asia so she suggested we meet at Shanghai Blues. I hauled myself to Holborn daydreaming of delicious silken noodles, popiah and fresh, meat-packed pot stickers. I couldn't wait.

I got there fairly early and realised that there's nothing as cheery as a big fat happy Buddha to cure your blues.

I was surprised at how big the place was and how nicely decorated it is. A far cry from Chinatown's traditional Chinese restaurants, SB looked every part of a city restaurant: slick, sexy, and modern...
