Square Meal Review of Roka Aldwych ?

Roka’s brand of high-gloss contemporary Japanese dining is showcased beautifully at its largest branch on Aldwych, where a stylish mix of natural stone, grey timbers and dried green oak creates a subtly sophisticated setting. Like its siblings across the capital, this outlet puts the robata grill centre stage, and many favourite items from Roka’s back catalogue are on display – from tender Korean-spiced lamb cutlets to black cod marinated in yuzu miso. There are also dazzling platters of sushi and sashimi showcasing impeccable sourcing – witness translucent slivers of yellowtail and morsels of sweet-fleshed shrimp with caviar. Elsewhere, top calls range from juicy grilled scallops with a textured wasabi topping to velvety Wagyu beef offset by pickled mushrooms. The high-end list of sakés, global wines and sexy shochu-based cocktails can also be sampled at the elegant bar, while smooth service is a hallmark throughout.

  1. Being a lover of fish, simple flavours as well as easy to share food, Japanese cuisine ticks all my eating preferences which is why it’s still one of my most favourite cuisines. However, sushi in particular tends to not to be as popular with others with the idea of raw fish, smaller portions or even sometimes a menu not focusing on meat dishes are all excuses I’ve continuously heard.

When the opportunity does arise and I’m armed with a group of equally obsessed sushi fanatics (Mehreen, Angie & Gary), it’s all systems go and ROKA was the destination of choice. The only problem was how to narrow down our choices...

  1. After hearing so much about ROKA restaurants and their fantastic food from both Angie and Andrea, it's been top of my "must visit" London restaurant list for quite a while, and so when Time Out popped up with their incredible value £30 voucher for unlimited food and wine at ROKA Aldwych, the newest ROKA restaurant, a hashtag of merry bloggers couldn't resist, could we?!

  1. Roka Aldwych is the newest restaurant from Rainier Becker and the 4th Roka in London (others located at Charlotte Street, Mayfair and Canary Wharf). The group of restaurants have set the standard for excellent Japanese cuisine in London, so I was looking forward to trying Roka Aldwych out when bestie and I got together recently.

The Aldwych restaurant is certainly a looker. A Japanese bathtub with running water greets you as you walk in, a really welcoming bar area with large windows in the front of the restaurant and a huge robata grill in the middle. I liked being able to see and hear the chefs at work...

  1. When Roka opened a fourth branch in Aldwych, I was keen to check it out. Roka is my favourite sushi restaurant in London with faultless food, a sexy and seductive atmosphere and killer cocktails - I've never had a bad experience there.

After a fun meal at Hibiscus back in January, Roka Aldwych was next on the list for some fellow bloggers and I. Joining me were Gary from The Foodaholic, Mehreen from Wrap your Lips Around This and Tahira from Ramblings of a Food Addict. Over the past year, we've got to know each other really well and look forward to these nights out with great anticipation...

  1. Last week, Tom treated me to an amazing weekend to celebrate my birthday.

He arranged for us to stay in a beautiful apartment on Aldwych (more to come on that) directly across the road from the restaurant he'd chosen for dinner - Roka.

I love Japanese food and Roka has been on my to-go list for years so Tom really excelled with this choice!...

Time to be an Adult :: Time to be an Adult: ROKA Aldwych review

Last month we went to London for a long weekend in celebration of my birthday. This has turned into something of a tradition now and we always try to book dinner in a special restaurant while we're there.

When I explored Taste of London earlier in the year I was seriously impressed by the offerings from ROKA and knew that Sion would love the Japanese menu just as much as me.
