Square Meal Review of Roast ?

Opened 10 years ago by Cinnamon Club founder Iqbal Wahhab, Roast has become a Borough Market classic. It occupies handsome high-ceilinged premises overlooking the market below, with a dining room featuring well-dressed tables and impressive arched windows. Meat is its métier: we love the British-reared beauties such as meltingly soft rare-breed suckling pig with mash and Bramley apple sauce, flavour-drenched beef Wellington, and steaks to rival Hawksmoor. Other dishes – hake with whipped Jerusalem artichoke and brown shrimps, say, or a starter of creamed spelt with chanterelles and chard – are less lauded but show equal attention to detail. Tight tables and boomy acoustics are common complaints, and some diners reckon the experience is “underwhelming compared to the hype” but the “efficient and almost invisible” service is highly praised. The extensive wine list (with some bargains), and the legendary Full Borough breakfasts, are two more boasts of Roast.

  1. Founded in 2005 by restaurateur Iqbal Wahhab OBE, the man behind the famous Cinnamon Club, Roast Restaurant sits within the iconic Borough Market. It’s a beautiful looking restaurant with its high ceilings and tall windows that usher in lots of lovely natural light. The arched window panels high above the dining room add a sense of the angelic to the restaurant, and there’s a sense of serenity and calm to it that makes for a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the famous foodie market...

    Saying it straight :: Roast. Borough Market.

    Really, I hadn’t meant to stay for so long, but after the “SW19″ cocktail at the beginning and the unspecified, but very alcoholic cocktail at the end, I suspect that my sense of time was somewhat impaired...

    SamTheFoodFan :: Roast

    Roast is situated in one of the most famous food markets in the UK, if not the world! Borough Market was first mentioned in 1276, although the market itself claims to have existed since 1014 "and probably much earlier” according to Wikipedia. It is certainly my favourite market in London and a place I always take visitors. So it’s a wonder that it has taken me this long to visit Roast.

    The restaurant sits in the rafters of Borough market and is accessed via lift. Light is flooded in through the huge floor to ceiling windows, with absolutely stunning views over the City skyline. As you would expect, the clientele...

  1. So I finally made it to Roast, above Borough market, despite living in the postcode for nearly five years. I’d previously read bad reviews and never knew anyone who had been, so it fell of my wish list some years back. That was until a friend of mine mentioned it. Said friend and I, we’ll call him blue eyes, were long due a catch up and it meant I had a short distance to hop after a long day with the toddler, so I was game to give it a go.

    The evening started off well, with a beautifully made and rather too easily drunk Earl Grey Martini. In the background a live singer added to the chilled ambience of the...

  1. Ever since we started working on the South Bank, we have always wanted to visit Roast. It’s been on our restaurant bucket list for so long, finally we went.

    Roast is perched above the lovely Borough Market, with views of not just the bustling market and Market Porter pub, but also of the Shard and St Paul’s. Serving up British food with produce from the handily located market below. It’s owned by restaurateur Iqbal Wahhab, who founded the Cinnamon Club and who also recently took over the Indian street food restaurant Mooli’s...

    Lou :: Roast restaurant at Borough Market – sensational

    Roast restaurant serves carefully sourced British roasts and traditional dishes, has an extensive wine and cocktail list, great views over Borough Market in one direction or St Paul’s in another, and knowledgeable serving staff.

    It’s not cheap but you get what you pay for – a top quality experience.

    You can keep costs down by ordering from the Market Menu (three courses from a set menu for £30, or £35 on Sundays) or even by getting a take-away sandwich from the Roast To Go stall situated just outside in Borough Market itself (a pork belly and crackling sandwich with Bramley apple sauce is £6.50)...
