For years, Kaushy Patel and family simply dispensed their samosas and other street snacks from a serving hatch, but these days they’re happily ensconced in rather more sophisticated, sit-down
premises. The crowds come here for highly flavoursome Indian vegetarian food, and you can get a taste of things by ordering the mixed platter to start: pethis (spiced coconut balls, deep fried in a
fluffy potato coating) and rhengham bhajia (thin sliced aubergines in crispy batter) sit alongside light-as-clouds dhokra (a wonderfully nuanced savoury steamed sponge). To follow, don’t miss the
mind-blowing masala dosas – rolled rice-flour pancakes stuffed with spiced potato and onions, with spiky lentil sambar and cool coconut chutney on the side. Prashad means ‘blessed food’, and you
certainly feel beatific after a meal here. Unlicensed.
I first learnt about Prashad through Kaushy Patel’s lovely recipe book of the same name. Being not terribly meaty in my culinary persuasions, I was rather taken by Prashad’s wholly vegetarian menu, which was chock-full of intriguing dishes I’d never previously encountered. Indeed, there wasn’t a korma to be seen anywhere, meaning I’d definitely have to branch out!The restaurant itself is located in the tiny village of Drighlington, to the south of the midpoint between Bradford and Leeds. Spread over two floors, we found it surprisingly full on the Tuesday evening we visited – a sure sign of a popular local spot....
