Following the arrival of new owners, this longstanding fixture of the Bath scene is now trading as a ‘bistro’ rather than a ‘restaurant’ – although little else has changed. The riverside setting,
hard by the famous Pulteney Bridge, is a big asset and the kitchen continues to know out a mix of French and Med-inspired dishes. Oven-baked snails in chilli and garlic butter or ham hock terrine
with fig chutney and warm brioche could give way to caramelised duck breast with mash, port and mixed berry jus, grilled lamb cutlets with minted crushed new potatoes or fillet steak with
dauphinoise potatoes, with desserts such as crème brûlée bringing things to a close in true Gallic style. Two-course set lunches are terrific value at £11.95 (including a glass of wine) and there’s
live jazz on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
HomeI took a pre Christmas break to Bath for some quality birthday R&R. On the recommendation of our hotel we visited No.5 Bistro. This modern French bistro is modest and welcoming, with a three piece jazz trio and friendly service. We started with scallops and the traditional escargot in garlic sauce which were divine. For mains we tried Filet Mignon and duck done three ways, which, although I’m not a duck fan, was very tasty and well presented. This was followed by chocolate mousse, of which I consider myself a expert, which was somewhat disappointing. We relaxed and took our time enjoying the jazz before leaving...
