Following in the footsteps of Sticks ’N’ Sushi and Roka Aldwych, Murakami adds to Covent Garden’s Japanese credentials with its Izakaya menu of sushi, salads, tempura, dumplings and robata grills. The first London outpost of a Ukrainian chain, it’s a large, contemporary space that can lack atmosphere, but if you want more action you can always sit at the counter to watch knife-wielding chefs. Good-looking dishes arrive as they’re ready, though flavour didn’t always live up to presentation on our recent visit. Highlights included plump ebi gyoza satisfyingly stuffed with sweet king prawn, umami-rich miso-grilled aubergine and zippy yellowtail carpaccio with chilli ponzu. But crispy baby squid lacked real crunch and freshness, while sashimi fell down on quality in comparison with its upmarket competitors. This is reflected in lower prices however, and other pluses – willing service, interesting saké flights and Japanese whiskies – also offer consolation.

I seemed to be reviewing a lot of Japanese eateries lately. Japanese is not the only cuisine that I like. I mean I eat Chinese, French, Spainish and etc. Being Chinese, I am biased towards Asian food. It is what I grew up with so I tend to have more knowledge about it. Japanese food is not all about sushi but I am reviewing a sushi restaurant this time. There seems to be few new Japanese restaurants opened up in the past few months and the standards are fierce.Located at the very convenient Covent Garden on St Martin's Lane is Murakami, a sushi and robata grill restaurant. Modern décor overlooking a sushi...

A confession to make – eating here was actually option C on a hectic Friday night out. Options A and B sadly did not have tables at a reasonable hour hour. This place won by fact that it surprised my phone with a pop up when I was frantically searching for alternatives. So, when this place popped up in one of those websites that offer discounts, it seemed like the solution to our problems – although in hindsight, perhaps one might have wondered why a place would need to offer a 25% discount on the busiest night of the week…Murakami describes itself as a modern Japanese restaurant and on first appearances, looked...
