Staff dressed in turbans and kilts point up the quirky Punjabi-Scottish theme at Mr Singh’s – a luxuriously appointed restaurant set behind a grand stone facade on Glasgow’s Charing Cross. Run by three generations of the Singh family, the restaurant has become a favourite with locals and celebs over the years, mainly because it offers something a bit different to the Indian norm. The menu has its share of mixed marriages, witness haggis pakoras or mince ‘n’ tatties curry, although you can also get the full range of more familiar curry-house favourites. Starters of vegetable samosas, chicken chaat or fried bhatura bread set the scene for assorted tandooris, tikkas and old faithfuls such rogan josh, karahi bhuna or sweet-and-sour chasni dishes. Good-value set menus and business lunches also bring in the crowds.
