The streetwise burger kings behind West End big hitter Meatliquor are back with a new opening in Hoxton. Occupying an old Christian mission by the Market, Meatmission (geddit?) mixes some
favourites from the owners’ back catalogue (dead hippie burger, deep-fried pickles) with a couple of new burgers and must-haves such as ‘currywurst and red in bread’ (an edible bread ‘bowl’ packed
with beef chilli and embellishments) and modish ‘monkey fingers’ (bites of chicken in the house ‘buffalo chilli’ sauce with blue cheese dip). Much of the original ecclesiastical architecture has
been retained, although a stunning new stained glass ceiling has been installed and the space has been divided into two main areas – including a no-bookings bar/diner and a more traditional
sit-down space which conceals punters from prying eyes by means of one-way glass.
Last year a restaurant called MeatLiquor provided me with my first ever “dirty burger”. I remember it being greasy, drippy and messy to eat but above all it was ruddy delicious. Since then my burger obsession has taken me to Slider Bar, Burger Breakout, Honest Burger, Burger & Shake, Tommi’s Burger Joint, Patty&Bun, Burger & Lobster, BRGR.CO and Dirty Burger and I’m still not bored! I'm somewhat upset that my first visit to MEATMission had to be during the only month in my life when I'm not eating meat (it feels like Meat Free January is going on FOREVER). Despite having previously lived nearby, when hearing about the address, I felt a bit indignant – there was a market in Hoxton I didn’t know about?!? I’ve been to a few of MEAT branches. This time I accompanied the boys for their triple chilli challenge, at the Old street branch. The Old Street branch is a bit confusing to get to. Google maps led me to a bright red neon sign with “Meat” and a red arrow direction. MEATmisson is a converted old church.
