Square Meal Review of Meatmission ?

The streetwise burger kings behind West End big hitter Meatliquor are back with a new opening in Hoxton. Occupying an old Christian mission by the Market, Meatmission (geddit?) mixes some favourites from the owners’ back catalogue (dead hippie burger, deep-fried pickles) with a couple of new burgers and must-haves such as ‘currywurst and red in bread’ (an edible bread ‘bowl’ packed with beef chilli and embellishments) and modish ‘monkey fingers’ (bites of chicken in the house ‘buffalo chilli’ sauce with blue cheese dip). Much of the original ecclesiastical architecture has been retained, although a stunning new stained glass ceiling has been installed and the space has been divided into two main areas – including a no-bookings bar/diner and a more traditional sit-down space which conceals punters from prying eyes by means of one-way glass.

    Samphire and Salsify :: MeatMission

    Last year a restaurant called MeatLiquor provided me with my first ever “dirty burger”. I remember it being greasy, drippy and messy to eat but above all it was ruddy delicious. Since then my burger obsession has taken me to Slider Bar, Burger Breakout, Honest Burger, Burger & Shake, Tommi’s Burger Joint, Patty&Bun, Burger & Lobster, BRGR.CO and Dirty Burger and I’m still not bored! When I heard the people behind MeatLiquor and MeatMarket were opening MeatMission I couldn’t resist going...

  1. I'm somewhat upset that my first visit to MEATMission had to be during the only month in my life when I'm not eating meat (it feels like Meat Free January is going on FOREVER). That said, regular readers of this blog will know that I have been working through a few veggie burgers - a portobello mushroom burger from Byron, and a halloumi burger from The Diner - and so it does give me an opportunity to sample the veggie offering from the MEAT[insert pun here] phenomenon...

    FoodiesOnTheProwl FoodiesOnTheProwl :: MEATmission, Jan 2013

    “The trend is your fickle friend”…most Foodies are herd-like creatures that are slavishly looking for the next new joint to fulfil their ever changing food cravings, guided by what’s considered trendy cuisine at any particular time. FoodiesontheProwl completely fits this bill of ‘food-zombies’ :) and one of the big trends of London’s food scene of the past 2 years has been that of…you guessed it…glorious, succulent, makes-me-crave-for-even-more burgers. We recently tried out some of MEATmarket’s product offering and it left us wanting to try more creations of the people behind MEATliquor and consortium. Bring on MEATmission!...

    LONDONcalling :: MEATmission

     I wonder what our American cousins across the pond make of our new found enthusiasm for hamburgers? I would guess they may be having a little chuckle to themselves. Given all of the recent openings in London, I.m beginning to think a new burger joint will be gracing every street corner next year.The latest offering from those nice MEATliquor people has much the same menu as the original and pretty much the same kind of vibe. As we approached the only immediate difference we noticed was a lack of any queue. Inside even more surprising was the lack of custom, we counted twelve customers apart from ourselves. Admittedly...

    Culinary Creep :: MEATMission, Hoxton

    The 3rd and newest outpost of the Meat burger restaurants is located in Hoxton in Hoxton market. Despite having previously lived nearby, when hearing about the address, I felt a bit indignant – there was a market in Hoxton I didn’t know about?!? Why have I not been told about this and dragged my poor husband along while I annoyingly take photos of everything and study each and every stall for 5 minutes while he gets more and more bored? Turns out it’s a small area, primarily a car park out the back of the Holiday Inn on Old St. Less exciting...

    TRUsocial :: MEAT!

    I can't start my weekend without sharing a little something about my favourite dirty burger of of the moment! MEATmarket is a little slice of gluttonous heaven served up on a plastic tray and [quite coincidentally] happens to be home to some of the nicest chilli cheese fries I've tasted in a long while (I'll get to the burgers shortly!).

    Tucked away at the back of Jubilee Market in Covent Garden, this place is the love child of the graffiti-clad goth fairytale scene at MEATliquor, which in turn was the first permanent site for the enterprising Meatwagon pop-up. It has since spawned MEATmission in Hoxton (complete...

  1. Just over 1 year on from the doors opening at MEATliquor we now have their latest offering MEATmission. A few minutes walk from Old Street station they have taken over what was a Christian Mission building and turned it into their smartest venture yet...

  1. I’ve been to a few of MEAT branches. This time I accompanied the boys for their triple chilli challenge, at the Old street branch. The Old Street branch is a bit confusing to get to. Google maps led me to a bright red neon sign with “Meat” and a red arrow direction. MEATmisson is a converted old church. It bears similar themes to the other branches.

    I sat in the dark waiting for the boys to arrive. There was no way I would take up another “man vs food” challenge. I just got myself a simple dirty chicken burger & chilli fries to share...

    Samphire and Salsify :: MEATmission, Shoreditch

    Since my first visit to MEATmission in Shoreditch (by the same people behind MEATliquor and MEATmarket) I’ve become a bit of an addict – I simply love their burgers. When I heard they were celebrating their first birthday by offering 50% off the bill if you took along a helium balloon, I made sure I was there.

    The inside is my favourite of all three as it’s housed within a former Christian mission and lots of the original plaques on the wall remain untouched. Then there’s the addition of a lit glass ceiling with a demonic version of the last supper sprawled all over it...

  1. MEATmission is the third branch of the MEAT chain (after MEATliqour and MEATmarket). Taking its name from the former Christian mission that it occupies, there is obvious effort to preserve as much of the original interiors as possible. For one, the tablets are still in place on the walls. Fancy having a burger with decades old remains right next to you? You've come to the right place.

    As this is the first MEAT joint that I've been to, I didn't know what to expect other than salads probably isn't its forte. The roll of highly absorbent kitchen towels on each table hinted a messy affair. And it turned out to...

  1. On a wet Friday evening, the Hog and I were in town and I had a sudden hankering for MEATliquor. We walked there only to find a massive queue, so decided to give it a miss. However, my craving didn’t subside, so we booked MEATmission for the next evening. What a great idea… they actually take bookings!...

    fatmanclaphand :: MEATmission: Holy Hell

    If there's one thing sure to give you a 4pm energy crash at the office it's sitting in a darkened church, drinking a pint of 5% Sierra Nevada and demolishing a chilli-topped burger with chips at 1pm on a Friday.

    And with God as my witness I said I would do it again. MEATmission, the sister of MEATliquor, opened in a former mission near Hoxton Square at the start of the year. Quite how the poor souls who founded the place, and who's names adorn plaques on the walls, would feel about this transformation is now irrelevant. In this modern age it will have more evangelists through its doors as a burger bar...

    SamTheFoodFan :: MEATmission

    Last year saw an explosion of 'Dirty' burger joints onto the London restaurant scene and the leader of the pack was MEATliquor. It started out as a MEATwagon, but proved so successful that there are now three more restaurants in the MEAT stable and it was the newest one, MEATmission, that I chose to pop my 'dirty' burger cherry on!

    TBH works in Old street, which is within walking distance of MEATmission and why we chose to go to this outpost. It is thus called because it is housed in an old Christian missionary on Hoxton Market. The decor is dark and moody with a gorgeous stained glass ceiling. The pictures...
