Over the years, Matsuri has established a strong reputation & continues to appeal to the expense-account crowd. A corporate-looking bar area gives way to neat rows of dark banquettes in an
otherwise unadorned dining room. Discreetly tucked behind a slatted wooden partition is a long sushi bar. Staff are polite, happy to guide customers through a pricey menu that features tempura
& ‘impeccable sashimi’ alongside such crowd-pleasers as soft-shell crab rolls, lobster tempura & the ubiquitous black cod in miso (you can also order it with ginger, or teriyaki-style).
Meats from the grill – chicken, duck or steak – make a good match for, say, white asparagus & shrimp salad. Seasonal additions might include rockfish baked with Japanese herbs. The basement is
home to two large teppan grills, for groups to enjoy some traditional gastro-theatre. Matsuri’s long, French-heavy wine list is supplemented by a sizeable choice of sakés.
