Though it sits on Roman foundations, there's a thoroughly contemporary feel to this "appealing" City Italian: a modernist box designed by Sir Norman Foster with exposed ducting and huge windows, saved from minimalist chill by idiosyncratic lighting and mushroom-toned banquettes. Real warmth comes from the service and the big flavours on offer. Graze on cured meats or pillow-soft burrata with Sardinian flatbread before launching into some golden-hued pasta – we like the succulent rabbit pappardelle with lemon and the autumnal oomph of truffle and potato ravioli with girolles and pesto. We're also fans of the robust mains – from hake on fregola with tomato and wild fennel to char-grilled saltmarsh lamb, cooked perfectly pink and served with mint salmoriglio. Desserts include a subtle thyme pannacotta, while the wine list tours the Italian regions, picking out lesser-known treats.
