Square Meal Review of Manchester House ?

A Mancunian “must-visit”, Manchester House looks “absolutely amazing” – even though its über-glamorous bar/lounge and “wonderfully vibrant” industrial-lite dining room are 10 floors apart in an office block. Chef Aiden Byrne’s bold, highly worked and “stunningly imaginative” cooking is well-known to viewers of the Great British Menu, and he’s happy to roll out many of his TV hits here – note the prawn cocktail under a dome of passion fruit ice. But the best stuff is subtler, and relies on keen technique as well as expert handling – as in a dazzling combo of Rioja-braised snails with razor clams, charred lettuce and Stilton, a curious pairing of veal fillet and sweetbread with lobster and wild garlic or slabs of belted Galloway beef with ‘mushrooms, potato sticks and stones’ (presented as a homage to The Flintstones). “Every last drop is packed with flavour” as Byrne’s team deliver success after success. For dessert, go off-piste with an assemblage of beetroot, hibiscus and rhubarb or do the right thing by ordering Manchester tart. “Complete satisfaction guaranteed”, says one fan.

    Nomface :: Manchester House, Manchester

    We made our booking for the first Friday evening service of Manchester House some time ago when bookings were first released. Having recently seen Aiden Byrne demonstrating two dishes from the menu at the Liverpool Food & Drink Festival it heightened our anticipations. I must admit when the price for the tasting menu was announced at £95 per head we considered going a la carte but settled for the 12 course taster menu in the end...

    Champagne and Chutney :: Manchester House and Lounge

    There is one restaurant in Manchester I have wanted to try for a very, very long time – the very aptly named Manchester House and Lounge. It’s been the talk of the town since it opened in 2013 and is considered one of the best restaurants outside of the M25! It’s run by Aiden Byrne, the youngest-ever winner of the so very coveted Michelin Star. And to add to that, it’s a venture by Living Ventures - the restaurant giants who also own another favourite restaurant of mine – Australasia.

    Manchester House and Lounge is a £3million venture, the kitchen alone cost over £300,000 with over 25 chefs working on Aiden...

    Foodographic :: Manchester House

    The bar on the 12th floor offers wraparound views of Manchester, which is ok if you enjoy noseying into office blocks, but for me, a great view is more Tuscany than Trafford. The cocktail menu weighs the same as a small dog and lists the name of every barman that invented every cocktail for the last hundred years. Diners are served canapés in the bar with pre-dinner drinks. Ours included spoonfuls of crab with lemongrass, beetroot and foie gras macaron and a wafer thin film of red pepper.

    Down in the 2nd floor restaurant, bread was served as a course in itself; light Onion and Bacon Brioche with a quenelle...

Aiden Byrne

Aiden Byrne’s CV bristles with big names from the fine-dining circuit: Tom Aikens, The Grill at the Dorchester, Pied à Terre, Adlards and Danesfield House, to cite but a few. Since 2009, he’s been looking after The Church Green (his pub/grill at Lymm) and Manchester House, an ambitious city-centre restaurant in partnership with Living Ventures. Byrne still holds the record for the youngest British chef to win a Michelin star (aged just 22).
