Nobody expects proper fine dining off Leicester Square, but that's exactly what this deliberately upscale Indian delivers. With interiors of grey leather and dark woods, with splashes of orange and sparkling glasses above the bar adding the odd vibrant touch, it's a slick proposition. Ambition is high and the kitchen does deliver, preparing everything on site (including chutneys) and creating memorable flavours inspired by the subcontinent's regional cuisines. Crisp golgappas (puffed, battered spheres of sweetcorn chaat) are packed with fiery intensity, sweet potato and chilli 'samoseys' (with drier, thicker pastry than a samosa) are revved up with tamarind chutney, and sublimely tender lamb rump arrives adorned with slivers of gold leaf. Light, fruity mango shrikhand is a perfect finish, while all dishes are paired with thoughtfully curated wines. Sit at the back for an intimate meal, or watch the tourists passing by up front.

Lotus is a rather inconspicuous looking restaurant located in the busy streets of Charing Cross. It would be easy to walk past Lotus without a second thought, but that would be a mistake, as what waits inside is a luxurious contemporary restaurant serving stunning Indian cuisine. The team of chefs that work at Lotus have worked at the finest luxury restaurants in India and this is instantly evident from the indulgent and innovative menu. The menu features many tempting dishes that I have not seen before, including tandoori partridge and Pigeon Masala Dosa. We started our meal with an assortment of poppadums...

Lotus, Charing Cross – in the middle of the theatres and scurrying tourist, would a fine Indian meal cross your mind? It didn’t to me. Anywhere in the region of Leicester Square is likely to be a tourist zone. So, I thought, why would Lotus be any different to other restaurants? It did not appear to be until recently, when I was invited to dine with them. The invitation was for a food and wine pairing menu evening. Looks like it is getting better.
