Almost as much of a landmark as its namesake Tower Bridge, this South Bank stalwart has been revitalised following a dashing refurb. With white tablecloths and plush carpets, the long dining room is still reminiscent of a cruise liner, while the food has its luxurious moments. Starters, such as marinated native lobster or seared duck foie gras with black figs, are signs the revamped kitchen is confident with the French classics – a feeling reinforced by our heftily priced Dover sole, which lifted off the bone with the lightest of touches. Elsewhere, astringent blackberries overpowered a dish of roast grouse, while the crêpes Suzette were flambéed in the centre of the room, so we missed the tableside drama. Service was pretty chaotic when we visited, but with glamorous surroundings – and a clientele to match – we reckon this old stager will soon be back on the culinary map.

hen I mentioned to Dad that Le Pont de la Tour was having a serious refurb he told me that it was somewhere that we used to go as a family when I was younger and he was working in London. In fact it seems that my love of the D&D restaurants has been set since childhood as we also loved Quaglino's!So when Angie asked if I'd like to enjoy a luxurious ladies' lunch at Le Pont de la Tour, I couldn't resist the chance!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Especially when you can look back and mentally kick yourself for making certain choices. I had been bemoaning the lack of writing motivation to my dining companion but following my most recent gastronomic adventure, inspiration was abounding in abundance.Salad of soft poached egg, pancetta and French beans. The yolk almost looked too pretty to be eaten but my fellow diner had no qualms about disturbing perfection as she quickly breached the surface letting messy goodness spew over the healthy part of the meal. I’m informed that it was not bad.
