Square Meal Review of Lamberts ?

A perennial favourite of Square Meal readers, Lamberts is praised for its seasonal British food, decent prices and exceptional staff. We’re great fans too, only adding that the room itself with its deep-red walls, sinkable banquettes and sense of calm, makes a very comfortable setting that lends itself to romantic and special dinners. Owner Joe Lambert’s uncompromising attitude to decent independent local suppliers, to buying British and to all things green is enormously refreshing and makes for guilt-free celebrations. The menu – ordered into ‘field’, ‘sea’ and ‘farm’ – has widespread appeal: from perfectly pink lamb with a pungent minty crust to a delicate sea bream served with broccoli and toasted almonds. Puddings such as lemon curd, brown sugar meringue and shortbread show there’s plenty of room for indulgence. The drinks list also celebrates Blighty, with Meantime ales, Aspall cider and English fizz – as well as natural wines from around the world.

It’s clear, attractive, easy to navigate and helpful, and, whatever you think of no-addition wines, with the restaurant’s focus on seasonality and local produce, the page of Natural bottles does fit with that culinary ethic. Prices are keen, particularly on the Fine Wines selection, where only VAT and a £20 corkage are added to the price. ‘So good it made me want to go to Balham,’ said one judge.

  1. I only come to hear of Lamberts restaurant when I google Sunday roast, raved for it’s roast beef. There have been times when I tried to go on Sunday and found it was fully booked.

    My friend was contracted to work in the area last November and I suggested Lamberts for dinner. Lambert is along Balham High road and offers an intimate, friendly service with an ever-changing seasonal very British menu.

    Starters cost around from £7, mains range from £15-19, and desserts £6 onwards...

    A couple of Sunday’s ago my husband Geoff and I popped up to London to visit Helen and Sam and enjoy a meal and a catch-up.
