A popular and award-winning French restaurant that has built a dedicated following since launching in 2001, La Garrigue specialises in the food of the Languedoc – the home region of chef/proprietor
Jean-Michel Gauffre. Hardly any distance from the Royal Mile, the attractive interior has a tidy, rustic feel, and service is just so. A typical dinner could bring rabbit, hare and pickled walnut
terrine with apple salad and horseradish dressing followed by roast monkfish with shellfish and leeks in a red wine bisque. To finish, the acclaimed lavender crème brûlée with an almond tuile still
tops the bill. Lunch is good value (£12.50/15.50 for two/three courses) and there’s an excellent one-course deal with a glass of wine for £14.50. The full wine list focuses on artisan and
specialist producers from southern France including Mas de Daumas Gassac and organic Domaine de Clovallon, with plenty offered by the glass and pichet.
It’s often in January when the wonders of social media bring forth dining diamonds. Such was the case when the tweet came through from Jean-Michel from La Garrigue to proclaim “1 night only – 3 courses for £20″. I was there like a shot.I’d visited previously, for lunch, so was aware of the quality that would be on offer, but this evening did a fine job at taking things to another level...
