"Shhh… please don't tell anyone", pleads a fan of Kitchen Table – although this "amazing" little venue hidden behind a curtain at the back of fabulous, fun-loving Bubbledogs is probably one of the worst-kept foodie secrets in town. Chef/proprietor James Knappett uses the 19-seater space to create an ever-changing tasting menu of palate-challenging, Michelin-starred dishes based on whatever's fresh that day – the offer usually comprises around 12 thrilling "flavour sensations", and each is described by a single word: oyster, monkfish, duck, rhubarb and so on. Wines by the glass from lesser-known producers are "excellent", but stick to what the house does best – namely 'grower' Champagnes. The lucky few get front-row seats overlooking the action, allowing them to marvel as each dish is presented and explained by the chef. However, bookings are like gold dust, so it's worth keeping an eye on Twitter for cancellations.
Last weekend I had a real treat. Some time at the end of last year a plan was made to visit The Kitchen Table at Bubbledogs, a chef's table run by James Knappett that won its first Michelin star last year. Obviously, with a Michelin star comes a long waiting list, so we weren't able to get a Saturday night reservation until last weekend. 10 of us had a booking for 7.30.
