SquareMeal Review of Kerbisher & Malt Hammersmith

Bronze Award

Dubbed the “the thinking diners’ chippy”, Kerbisher & Malt delivers its goods with “style” and an eye on the market. Scrubbed-up interiors set the tone with lots of bright tiles, painted frames, exposed wood and panelled walls inspired by old fishing boats, while the daily menu keeps it simple and honest. Fish from sustainable sources is served with “gorgeous” twice-cooked chips, chunky onion rings and mushy peas made of the premises, but the repertoire also takes in whitebait, crispy calamari, fish burgers and a few non-piscine offerings (pork sausages in a bun or spicy veg bites), plus some ice creams for dessert. Also check the specials board for cut-price lunch deals and other offers. To drink, choose from a short batch of wines, Fentiman’s soft drinks or Meantime bottled beers. Expect regular queues at the takeaway counter.

best fish & chips in london!
Love this place – its hard to find good fish and chips in London, but this place delivers them with style. Unlike the horrible places you get now that can't decide between kebabs, nuggets or fried chicken – this place only serves fish! The food is delicious – from the fresh fish to the homemade tartar sauce and mushy peas. The restaurant is small but well designed, and you can also order your food to take home with you. If you live around Brook Green, this is another little gem of a restaurant and one you must try out!

Wonderful fish and chips restaurant. Fresh fish and double fried chips make all the difference here. Our personal favourites are breaded cod and whitebait, and of course the chips. Style and substance are both definitely evident in this place.

Traveled from the States to attend concerts at the Apollo. On the bucket list for this trip was to experience the best fish & chips London had to offer. It was right in Hammersmith! The other reviews are spot on. The fish is fresh and the batter is so light and crisp it melts in your mouth. I'm going back tomorrow to try those pickled fried onions – they looked very interesting. Only thing to keep in mind – check their hours. The first day I went during the early afternoon hours and they were closed. So glad I went back!

The premise here is simple – top-quality fish and chips at a reasonable price in a relaxed environment. Nodding to the grand history of the British chippie, décor is all demure tiling and black and white photos of a bygone age. The menu speaks volumes as well, with end-of-the-pier classics like chip butty and mushy peas joined by dishes – like Fennel and Dill salad and Crispy Calamari – which speak much more of West London than Weston-super-Mare Indeed despite much retro styling, so much is rooted in the modern food world. Service is bright and bouncy while the food hits all today’s culinary buzz-words. That means sustainably-sourced fish, freshly made sauces and environmentally-friendly packaging. Of course despite all these knowing nods to both past and future, the most important for the present is the food and happily, Kerbisher doesn’t let you down here. Cod and Pollack were prime specimens in a light, perfectly crispy batter. A heaped portion of greaseless chips banish fish-shop nightmares of the past. In their own special way, pickled onions and gherkins were divine, delectable additions. If there was one disappointment it was a Tartare Sauce that lacked just a little zing to really bring every bite to life. The lack of music and an alcohol licence (apparently on its way) also made the whole experience feel more café than restaurant despite the fine food. Yet as both a snapshot of British food history and future and, vitally, a cracking fish and chips, there can’t be many better than Kerbisher & Malt.

At last a fish and chip shop that feels like it belongs in the 21st century, without spoiling any of the great fish 'n chip traditions. The fish is the stand-out here, the freshest fish you'll find in London cooked to perfection in the cleanest oil. Haddock & chips was the best fish supper I've had since moving to London. Calamari and the homemade tartare were excellent and the fennel & dill salad a clever addition. It's a very buzzy place that could easily be twice the size, judging by the queue when we left. Highly recommended.

We had haddock and chips, with mushy peas and curry sauce, to take away. It was all superb: the fish was beautifully light and fluffy, with crispy batter, and the chips were great. The curry sauce was obviously home made, and the mushy peas were brilliantly mushy! It was all just several levels above anything I've had at even the best local chippy. We'd have eaten in, rather than taken away, if there'd been an alcohol licence – understand that one's on its way, which will be a definite plus, as the ambience is just right. Hope this enterprise goes from strength to strength – it certainly deserves to!
