Squaremeal Review of The Ivy Café Marylebone ?

This addition to Caprice Holdings' burgeoning Ivy brand replicates the well-tried all-day formula, but with cheaper prices, while Martin Brudnizki's design brings classy brasserie trappings in the shape of a brass-topped bar, pendant lighting, banquettes and a jazz piano soundtrack. Half the seats are reserved for walk-ins, and a good time is had by all. Ivy classics such as shepherd's pie, fishcakes, hamburgers and steaks loom large on the menu, alongside more fancy ideas: our light yet rich chicken liver parfait came topped with caramelised hazelnuts and a cherry and pepper compote, while aromatic duck curry featured enticingly crunchy strips of fresh coconut. To finish, don't miss the show-stopping chocolate bombe with hot caramel sauce and nuggets of honeycomb. Our only quibble concerns the narrow staircase down to the toilets (and kitchen), where you'll often encounter waiters carrying up trays of food. The Ivy Caf&’s newest family member in charming Marylebone Lane doesn’t push any gastronomic boats out, but then it doesn’t need to. it’s elegant and comfortable and does a wicked Negoni Tasting Set.
Weekend brunch in Marylebone is a notoriously staid affair. There’s rarely anything more controversial than somewhere serving eggs benedict using smoked bacon instead of ham. The responsibility for offering the smidgingly more lively breaky options such as Turkish Eggs (poached eggs in yoghurt and chilli oil) falls solely on the shoulders of The Providores. And for their presence on the High Street, I thank the goddesses...
