There's "no snobbery" about High Timber, an unashamedly wine-led City favourite by the Thames. Perhaps it's the South African heritage coming through (it's owned by the folks behind the Jordan wine estate), but you won't find a snooty sommelier blowing dust off ancient bottles here; instead, expect a modern glass-doored space with slate floors, mustard walls and a walk-in cellar, plus a terrace with terrific views. The menu offers "good, hearty servings" and bags of variety, ranging from lamb pastrami with broad beans, mint and pea shoots to Brixham crab tagliatelle or goats' cheese Wellington, but a glance round the room reveals a taste for red meat, with wooden boards of steak and chips at most tables. The "fantastic" wine list is naturally headlined by South Africa's finest, while "outstanding service" and rugby banter add to the mood.
