SquareMeal Review of High Timber

Silver Award

A wall of glass gives a view across the Thames to Tate Modern, but if you look the other way there are some interesting South African artworks on the walls of this sleek contemporary space – although High Timber’s Cape connection really shows when it comes to the wine list, since the owners’ portfolio includes the Jordan wine estate. Homemade biltong is one of a few nods to the motherland on a menu that offers the comfort of a burger as well as Asian-inspired five-spice duck with pistachio yoghurt. It’s a broad church, with a fashionable salad to start alongside more luxurious seared foie gras with carpaccio, plus “very good” steaks from grass-fed herds leading the line among main courses. The walk-in wine cellar is home to an impressive collection, with good options by the glass and a few greatest hits from around the world supporting the South African majority.

BORDERING ON FARCICAL

On a rainy  rough night , both we and our ( elderly Indian) guests had great difficuly just finding the restaurant, located in what is currently an enormous building site.(Only a hand-written signboard saved us.) The position ,right on the Thames , should have been a great selling-point-but the river was barely visible once we were seated in the largely deserted  ground floor space. This  absence of fellow-guests did at least deliver an exceptionally quiet room .The service was  intrusive , awkward and very slow  throughout, with our strange offputting waiter hovering and - interrupting our intimate conversation - asking for feedback. Portions were large, and we were glad we hadn't ordered starters. Even  with only one dessert , the bill came to £177(almost £20 for service.)We all found the whole setup disconcerting and almost amateurish , though vaguely comical. I certainly would not return.

Good food
Lovely to have a pre dinner drink outside overlooking the Thames. Food good but may be a tad expensive, Steak very good. Watch out for mineral water charges as they kept topping up the glasses but bottle not left on your table so you cant tell how many bottles you have had. If you want a quiet place to eat this may be it as only three tables occupied which may explain the attentive service.

Excellent restaurant with a great view.
Excellent all round with great menu choices, a very helpful sommelier and of course the Thames view. We also got the cricket score thrown in as well. Will certainly recommend the restaurant to colleagues and friends.

Excellent food and tremendous service. The staff have got it spot on, when it comes to being attentive without going over the top and were very good with food and drink recommendations.

Despite its excellent location and great menu, the quality of the food did not meet expectations. The red wine sauce with the bavette steak was tasty but the plate was swimming in it, leaving the diner feeling a little overwhelmed by its richness by the end of the meal (and we love rich food). Portions were incredibly small, even by London standards, and there was definitley no feeling of value for money – this isn't fine dining after all. To finish off a poor meal, we ordered the warm date pudding, envisaging lashings of sticky sauce and a moist, chewy cake, only to get a Mr. Kipling size slice of what looked like dry madeira cake, but was drier and burnt on the bottom. We left the burnt half on the plate, which is a rare thing in our family. On informing the waiter of the charred dessert we were told that the chef had been informed (although I'm assuming he was already aware when he took it out of the cake tin). There was no real apology and no offer of removing the offending item from the bill, which at £7.50 was not cheap. We said nothing further and promptly left. Overall we left the restaurant feeling distinctly unsatisified and will not be going back.

Excellent for steaks! Ate lunch there yesterday and rate the place very highly. Made to feel very welcome and the staff looked after us very well, especially as we ended up staying for a considerable amount of time. Menu is geared towards African meat eaters and the steaks were fabulous. Good wine list and also has a cellar offering a range of top notch South African reds. My only gripe would be to get another few signs about telling you how to find the place. Will definitely be going back.

very good food and excellent food combinations, the variety of both fish, meat and vegetables was really interesting and the spicy scallops were perfect – there was both a full a la carte menu as well as reduced price fixed lunch menu. the south african wine selection was top class and the service excellent. apart from the restaurant on the ground floor they have a dining option in the basement which looks good for private parties. will definitely come again. it is tnot hat easy to find the restaurant and an extra sign on the main road with directions would be handy.
