Square Meal Review of Hibiscus ?

While the Relais & Châteaux plaque hanging outside Hibiscus indicates that diners are in for something formally French, it doesn’t prepare visitors for the challenging, “experimental” nature of the cooking. Claude Bosi may have spent his apprenticeship in France but Hibiscus began life in Shropshire and that singular career path is evident in a highly original style, best sampled in the eight-course tasting menu. Intensely flavoured standouts might range from a rich bavarois of Norwegian king crab with sea leaves and cubes of jelllied smoked-haddock consommé to chestnut mushroom, coconut and curry ‘en cocotte’, an Asian-accented froth presented in a blue eggshell. A 2014 refurb replaced the previously dreary furnishings with beautiful table settings, striking blue upholstery, art on loan from local galleries and a private room. Hibiscus is firing on all cylinders: from intricate amuse-bouches to “attentive yet not intrusive” service, this is a top-flight gastronomic experiences. Great-value set lunch, too.

    The Cutlery Chronicles :: hibiscus, mayfair - review

    Following its revamp in early 2013, the dining room is now one of understated elegance and sophistication, without being stuffy - a pale wood floor, white walls with contemporary art, upholstered blue chairs, and a playful and brightly coloured theme found in the knife holders and water glasses.

    Saying it straight :: Hibiscus. Thank God I liked it.

    As you walk in (and you could so easily miss it, given its unassuming frontage on Maddox Street) a comfortable sofa and a reception desk that could double as a headboard. I’m starting to think that I need to change that whole velvet-buttoned look. Everything in cool blues and creams, comfortable upholstery. Everyone and everything is quiet when we get there, at pensioner-friendly 6.30. It’s great though, because I could talk to the staff. I am that woman. I have turned into my mother. Kill me now.

  1. When I met Tom (Food and Drinks Noob) and Tahira (Ramblings of a Food Addict) at an event last year, they invited me along for dinner and I was finally going to meet my Twitter buddies and fellow food bloggers, Mehreen and Gary.

    And for such a prestigious occasion why not choose one of the best? Two Michelin starred Hibiscus in Mayfair!

  1. When I started Ramblings of a Food Addict, it was always my intention to enter the world of fine-dining. Although, the start of my food journey has taken a more casual route veering towards the more trendy, affordable eateries across London, this year my journey becomes even more exciting.

Claude Bosi

caude bosi Lyon-born Claude Bosi, the son of restaurateurs, worked for some of France’s most storied chefs including Michel Rostang, Alain Ducasse and Alain Passard before moving to the UK in 1997 to learn English. In 1999, he won his first Michelin star at Overton Grange in Shropshire, before picking up a second red gong at his original Ludlow restaurant Hibiscus in 2003. In 2007, he uprooted Hibiscus and reopened it in Mayfair.
