Square Meal Review of Heliot at The Hippodrome ?

What started life as the West End’s legendary Hippodrome before going through several seedier incarnations was lavishly refitted to the tune of £40m in 2012 and re-launched as a blingy cabaret and casino. The latter’s shiny, 3D wall coverings and floors strewn with pennies evoke a ‘tacky Las Vegas charm’, but bare, oversized light bulbs, reclaimed pulleys and original metal girders give its US steakhouse restaurant a more relaxed, ‘backstage’ feel. Check out the gambling action on the floor below while perusing a comprehensive menu that scores at the calorific, comfort-food end of the spectrum – think ‘moreish’ mac ‘n’ cheese with poached duck egg and truffle shavings or ‘succulent’ bone-in beef rib with triple-cooked chips; full-on desserts such as knickerbocker glory and giant strawberry pavlova also tempt. Service is ‘faultless’, while a ‘wedding-disco soundtrack’ keeps the mood light.

  1. If we were to tell you that we had a great night out at the Hippodrome, you’d probably think we were a little crazy and/or drunk!

    To be honest if this review was done a few years back we would have to agree with you. I last had the displeasure of staggering out of the Hippodrome after a work’s awards night and was left with the memories of a dark somehow claustrophobic nightclub with damp, sticky carpets and overpriced drinks… Not good!

    But all that has changed and the recently opened Hippodrome Casino is now a spacious, welcoming and reasonably priced venue in the heart of the West End that’s open...

  1. The décor at both the casino and restaurant are bordering low key Las Vegas tackiness. But I think that is the charm of the place, it’s all about the flashing lights and flowing alcohol to keep you inside, and of course the food. There really is no reason to ever go home, right? Unless you run out of money of course. We started our evening with a cocktail from the bar which has been developed by the well-known Tony Conigliaro. The American Sour is particularly good and I would definitely make an excuse to come here again for cocktails...

    Foodie Force :: Hippodrome London

    I have been really looking forward to sharing this post, mainly because I had such a great night out last Saturday. Our destination was The Hippodrome in London Leicester Square for dinner, a little bit of gambling followed by a show.

    As a foodie I was looking forward to sampling the food on offer at Heliot's Steak House.

    Every good meal has to start with a few cocktails.
    The one on the right is Adam's apple (£9.50) vodka, shaken with peach, black raspberry lacquer, fresh lemon and apple...

  1. My first visit to Heliot Restaurant inside the Hippodrome casino in Leicester Square was a rather disappointing one; service was great but the food left a lot to be desired. When I heard that the restaurant had been taken over by the One Group (they own STK at the Me Hotel) and re-named Heliot Steakhouse I thought it could only be a good thing...

  1. I'm got no stomach for gambling. I haven't the nerve required for betting big enough to make money, and I haven't got enough money to give me the nerve. Every loss is like a stab to the heart of my travel fund. A week in Vegas resulted in only a dollar spent on some slot machines just to say I'd done it.

    But when Heliot Steakhouse in London's Hippodrome Casino is offering a three course meal with sides and a £10 gaming chip for £20? You can bet your bottom dollar I'll give the wheel a spin...

    Food I Fancy :: Heliot Steakhouse at the Hippodrome

    The restaurant spans over the first floor of the balcony area. It’s an unusual narrow space, which overlooks the boisterous punters at the roulette wheels below. The casino is celebrating its first birthday anniversary, so every now and then we have random bursts of entertainment such as the daring acrobats below...
