About

Serving up rustic Thai food in a contemporary setting, the Giggling Squid started its life in a tiny fisherman’s cottage in 2002. Since then it has become a small but successful chain offering up Thai tapas, curries and stir-fries.

Since you’re by the sea, it makes sense to visit a place so perfectly named. Thankfully, there’s more to the menu –not just squid (although we would recommend ordering some). ‘From the water’ you’ll find banana leaf-grilled sea bass, krachai prawns, and pad cha – a popular seafood stir fry.

If you aren’t one for seafood, its ‘from the land’ section offers up a selection of beef, duck and pork dishes that will make your mouth water. What’s more, for those who don’t like to stray from the classics, you can order a red or green Thai curry. The Giggling Squid refers to this dish as the old favourite of foreigners traveling in Thailand (they sure have us down to a tee, don’t they?).

Believe it or not, The Giggling squid originally started as a tapas restaurant. Since its humble beginnings, it had evolved into bigger things but it still has its original tapas menu (albeit with a Thai twist) to order for lunch time. We would go for the ‘starving squid’ with red curry, dumplings and spring rolls. Or if you’re feeling a little spendy, order the ‘wealthy squid’ with lamb curry, duck spring rolls, zingy prawns and jasmine rice to fill the spot and keep you going through to dinner.

This bright and airy restaurant, complete with nautical touches, authentic pops of colour and comfortable seating, fits the bill when it comes to simple food – exactly how they would eat it in Thailand. With so many dishes to choose from you can take comfort in knowing that whatever you order will be sure to curb your craving.

Glad to see it back
It's been a while since we were at the Giggling Squid in Hove - first because the last time we were there the lighting upstairs was so low that our middle-aged eyes couldn't read the menu and second because three-quarters of the place was nearly ruined forever by water damage in a storm. Now re-opened, the menu's much the same as before - which is a good thing, because nobody wants too much change. We had corncakes and an excellent satay gai drizzled with mayonnaise (which turned out to be coconut milk - so bullet dodged there). Main course was a fierce vegetarian green curry and a chicken Massaman which had the good sense to hide its onions at the very bottom so they didn't interfere with the rest of the dish. As is often the case, these are served in bowls that appear tiny but are actually almost bottomless - to my mind Thai food always fills you up more than Indian food. I'd prefer to drink my Singha out of the bottle but every time I tried an eagle-eyed waiter nipped in before me and re-filled the glass. That said, the food was delicious, so I'm not complaining.
