This slice of Galvin brothers magic turned 10 in 2015, and as a bistro archetype it's pretty much king of the hill – a noisy, animated, clattering rendezvous, full of Gallic pomp, polished wood panelling, ceiling fans and close-packed tables. The duo have rolled out some special dishes, such as rich boudin noir with apple sauce, to mark the anniversary, but the trusted repertoire remains in all its bourgeois glory. Fixtures such as steak tartare, the luscious Dorset crab lasagne with beurre nantais or pan-fried calf's liver with Alsace bacon and creamed shallots keep company with bright new ideas including sweet spiced smoked eel with roast pineapple and pickled shiitake mushrooms, while desserts are crowned by one of the best tarte Tatins in town. Those taking advantage of early-evening deals are never short-changed, and there are some "lovely" French wines too. In short, it's just the sort of place that francophiles like us adore.
