About

The team behind Wahaca (Thomasina Miers and Mark Selby) described the first DF Mexico in Shoreditch as an ‘experimental residency’, so this second casual, US/Mexico City mash-up proves it succeeded. Inside, the high ceiling is broken up by a rope canopy, and Wahaca fans will appreciate the rainbow colour scheme (featuring work by Mexican artists). Sit at booths or communal tables – all very wipe-clean, very child-friendly. The generously priced burritos don’t differ greatly from Wahaca’s but are full of smoky flavour, while the tortas (toasted brioche burgers with Mexican fillings) overflow with the sticky, sauce-smothered likes of slow-cooked chilli beef with chipotle mayo. Equally brimming tacos are also available, with sides including an unmissably creamy sweetcorn cup revealing a mixture of lime, mayo and cheese. You can order via self-service screens, but the option to talk to a human is welcome, as are the dangerously cheap, deeply cheerful DFrozen Margaritas.

Modern Mexican
I am a big fan of Wahaca (sister restaurant to DF Mexico), so thought I would go and see what, if anything, was different on the menu. The problem was that they had the same pork pibil tacos, so all bets were off, as I just can’t resist them, so it meant that I didn’t really try anything new – I did also order a side of fries (which you can’t get at Wahaca and imagine my delight when they were crinkle cut chips – that put a smile on my face that only a child of the 70’s will understand). Husband deliberated long and hard over the menu and opted for the 4 hour slow cooked chilli beef which comes with soft tortillas, salsa, slaw etc. Another “win” for me is that he rarely finishes a plate of food, so I got to snaffle that down too – it was divine. So far, so good. Now, the downside is that you wait to be seated and then are told that you have to go to the bar at the front to order your food and collect your drinks (I have no problem with that in principle, but when you want another drink half way through your meal, you have to get it yourself and remember to take your wallet or you will waste precious eating time to-ing and fro-ing while your food gets cold) and my other minor gripe is that they only do frozen margaritas, which at the speed I generally like to drink gives you a dreadful ice cream headache, so top tip – order 2 (or 3) at the start and by the end of the meal one of them will be the perfect temperature. There is a large “tipping box” by the front door, but I can’t for the life of me work out why as I did we did at least 50% of the work (we did tip, we are not mean, but it really needs to be one or the other, either we collect our own food and drink or you do it for us). That said, I fully expect to see more of these restaurants popping up around London. Very enjoyable, just the right side of spicy Mexican/US food.
