SquareMeal Review of Charlotte's Place

Silver Award

Situated on the edge of picturesque Ealing Common, Charlotte’s Place has been a local favourite for a while. The big sister of the Charlotte group (there is the Bistro in Chiswick and W5 in Ealing) has a light and airy upstairs dining area, which boasts a splendid bird’s eye view of the Common, to compliment the restaurant’s cosy ground-floor. The seasonal modern European menu changes monthly and there is a refined style to the cooking. Starters  of artfully arranged fresh-tasting goat’s milk yoghurt, beetroot and sesame, and the soft and delicate flavours of cured mackerel and cod cheeks sitting proudly on a creamy smooth vichyssoise with potato salad hit the mark nicely. Meanwhile, a chicken and mushroom terrine had plenty of depth and flavour and a crispy coated chicken wing with mouth-watering wild garlic butter lifted it to another level. A main of succulent pork with a potato and brawn terrine, cabbage and earthy blood pudding was a flavoursome, well-balanced dish. For dessert, a rich dark chocolate fondant with salted caramel ice cream and honeycomb rounded things off nicely. Lunch and dinner menus are keenly priced and a five-course tasting menu represents good value, while wines are taken very seriously, at a restaurant with a view worth dining out on.

Good but not fantastic out of the way little restaurant by Ealing Common.
Must be careful with this review.I have eaten there twice .Its the far side of Ealing Common which is nice as it very quiet with good parking. The service was good-polite clean and prompt with no fuss and quite professional. Its often quite full. Its a nice place to eat at lunch in summer outside. The menu was fairly elaborate the the dishes were up to their descriptions. On the second occassion however some of the sides were a bit burnt.I didnt complain. There appeared to be quite a turnover in waiting staff.Overseas students apparently though the first occassion I was greetd by a very polite manageress.Getting a table was no fuss-something I like,.Theres room upstairs and downstairs.Perhaps a little directionaless not sure if this is ever going to be a "chain"but thne that may not be what they want.

I cannot fault our lunch – from the moment the front of house greeted me at the door to the moment we left Charlotte's Place. I ordered the Butternut Quash Soup to start which sounds simple enough – however it was bursting with flavour and had an amazing texture complimented by the sage and chestnut brown butter. Delicious. Next was a Seabass filet with Scallop Mousse , Samphire , New Potatoes and Mussels a la Crème. The Seabass was cooked to perfection with a creamy sauce and slightly tart Samphire which gave the dish balance and texture. A new wine list was offered and it was new in that day so causing quite a stir. I couldn't decide what to have so the front of house helped me out, giving a very knowledgeable run down seen as it was a new menu. It matched my food perfectly. They even charged my dying phone for me – now that is service! I will without doubt be back.
