Pleasingly elegant decor, capable service and keen out-of-town prices, combined with Andrew McLeish’s clever cooking, make Chapter One well worth a drive down the A21. The Michelin-starred chef fashions all-manner of worldly-wise dishes from top-drawer materials and it’s certainly vivacious stuff, showing a high degree of culinary technique – even if there are lots of irritating supplements on the fixed-price menus. The kitchen deals in exquisite plates loaded with big, bold flavours: starters of jugged hare with pancetta, potato espuma and hare satay or smoked haddock kedgeree embellished with squid, red-vein sorrel and curry mayonnaise might precede a pithivier of free-range chicken with roasted foie gras, pancetta, Brussels sprouts and Madeira-glazed chestnuts. To finish, perhaps try peanut butter pannacotta with golden lime sorbet and pearls of cassis. Sommeliers are on hand to help with food-matching selections from the extensive wine list. “Reliably outstanding” sums it up.

Chapter One is a one Michelin-star commanding restaurant, based rather unusually out in the suburbs of Kent rather than the standard West End. The distance is misleading though and a swift 30 minute drive later, we were pulling up.The prices are another pleasant surprise – Sunday night sees 3 courses for £31.95 and the choices are mouth watering. For a set menu, it’s extensive featuring over 6 options. What is a little annoying is the randomly spliced supplements adorning the set menu. 1 menu supplement seems reasonable, 3 seemed excessive...
