Squaremeal Review of Ceviche Old Street ?

The Frith Street branch of this Peruvian kitchen was a real trailblazer and Martin Morales’ (much larger) eastern outpost does not disappoint. Airy with an open kitchen, the wooden tables and white-tiled walls are spruced up with eclectic artwork which is for sale. Nibble on crunchy cancha (salty, peppery corn) as you digest the menu, packed with citrus-y ceviche but with some meaty offerings. Share a collection of small plates; don’t pass on signature Don Ceviche – a chilli-marinated seabass dish with sweet potato and red onions – tangy and light but with real juicy substance. Similarly, tiradito chifa is a plate of finely-sliced tuna which is so vividly fresh it melts in the mouth with pleasing piquancy, while making a satisfying contrast to the crispy vermicelli. The huevo criollo (their take on a Scotch egg, encased in quinoa) is a welcome addition to the menu; soft and runny inside, crispy on the outside. Other newbies include delightfully tender panca-marinated beef heart skewers with a spicy rocoto chilli sauce, and perfectly pink flame-cooked beef fillet; lovely, although a little weird that it came with chunky chips. It’s definitely worth ordering the ceviche del dia and, of course, wash it down with a Pisco Sour (or three).

    I went to the first Ceviche in Soho around about when it first opened and to be honest, I wasn’t that impressed. They’ve since opened Andina in Shoreditch and now this, their second Ceviche right next to Moorfields Eye Hospital by Old Street roundabout.

    It’s a really beautiful spot, in a former squat, not that you’d be able to tell. There’s a long bar in the centre of the huge space and the walls are covered in vibrant art...

    I was fortunate enough to be invited along to the launch party of Martin Morales' second Ceviche restaurant, which has just opened in Old Street on the historic former site of the Alexandra Trust Dining Rooms.

    They've paid homage to the old layout with similar signage and bustling open kitchens, but Martin Morales' love of art and music is also evident with the space doubling as a contemporary Peruvian art gallery (see some works here). Space was made for DJ sets from Mr.Scruff and Natty Bo, a sign of Pisco Discos to come featuring music from Tiger's Milk Records, Martin Morales' Peruvian record label...

    Ceviche is the national dish of Peru - seafood marinated in lime juice, and naming a restaurant after such famous dish must do it to justice right? This is the second outpost of Martin Morales' wildly popular Ceviche restaurant and pisco bar. Ceviche is one of the foremost Peruvian restaurant to hit London, Peruvian food was barely known in the capital or in UK before that. I mean like few years ago, how often would you hear someone talk about ceviche let alone knowing what it was. The popularity of Peruvian even earned a Michelin star in the case of "Lima".

    I&m eating around the world without leaving London and this time I had Peruvian food at Ceviche. One can&t help but notice that Peruvian food is really hot right now, so me having it was long overdue.

Martin Morales

CHEF-IMAGe Martin Morales is the chef, restaurateur and founder of the award-winning Peruvian restaurants; Ceviche Soho, Michelin-Guide listed Andina in Shoreditch, Ceviche Old St, winner of the 2016 ‘Best Venue in the UK’ Retailers’ Retailer Award and the recent addition, Casita Andina in Soho. Each is lovingly crafted and unique in menu, design and character.
Born in Peru, but having lived in Britain for the last 30 years, Morales is the pioneer of Peruvian food in Britain. Alongside his cooking he is involved in a variety of music and arts projects including running Ceviche Old St Gallery – featuring Peru’s top 50 contemporary artists, founding a Peruvian music label, Tiger’s Milk Records, and is a Trustee at the Andean children’s charity Amantani. He has also been nominated by the Peruvian government as a food ambassador.
Morales is also the author of the bestselling cookbook Ceviche Peruvian Kitchen (Sunday Times Cookbook of the Year 2013), and hosts his own successful YouTube Channel ‘Martin’s Peruvian Kitchen’. He regularly appears on TV shows such as Saturday Kitchen and Sunday Brunch. Before becoming a chef, Morales worked at Apple as iTunes Head of Pan EU, at Disney with Miley Cyrus and has DJed with The White Stripes and Basement Jaxx.
