Located just above Floridita and aimed at the same fun-loving crowd of media execs and happy-go-lucky tourists, this casual Indian is a cannily priced West End bolthole. Despite some misgivings
about the ‘tacky’ decor – a hotchpotch of concrete floors, chiffon curtains, vintage posters and shiny gold urns – Carom scores with its ‘speedy, gracious service’, ‘affordable’ bills and
‘fantastic food’ (courtesy of ex-Benares chef Vishnu Matarajan). The unadventurous but well-executed menu offers
typical dishes from across the subcontinent – think tandoori-grilled meats and regional curries, served with extra flourishes. Appetisers run from soft-shell crab fried in gently spiced batter to
grilled tiger prawns with tangy saffron, mango and poppy-seed slaw, while mains include the fragrant house biryani cooked under pastry. Carom’s lively bar area enjoys thematic seasonal makeovers –
an indoor ‘gin garden’ in summer, for example.
As a Londoner, and no less a Londoner who used to live on Brick Lane, I thought I knew of all the Indian dishes and the best Indian places to eat. Boy was I wrong. Ladies and gentlemen, it is time to re-educate your tastebuds, but be warned, you may abandon your current favourite curry joint F-O-R-E-V-E-R. I introduce you to….CaromAs we entered the restaurant my breath was taken away by seeing the gorgeous “Botanical Gin Garden, then we were lead into our dining area- intimate yet spacious with a rich magenta colour pouring into the room. This entire restaurant is gorgeous, perfect for dates, get togethers and...

Carom really surprised me with how good it actually was. I turned up expecting only to stay for a drink in their very swanky bar but ended up staying for an indulgent meal as well.Carom, named after the Indian spice also known as ajwain and not the Indian board game, is both a successful bar and restaurant, something which is very hard to achieve. The decadent and lively bar offers an extensive range of cocktails many of which are infused with Indian spices, herbs and Indian inspired ingredients. Advertising itself as serving pan-Indian cuisine, Carom at Meza in Soho is one of those places which aims to please the masses of Indian food lovers. Part of the D&D group, the kitchen here is lead by head chef Balaji Balachander, who previously worked for the Meat & Wine Co and Benares, Michelin Starred Indian restaurant. Carom is Balaji’s first opportunity as head chef, and he certainly has the credentials for the job. As for the restaurant itself - its oddly decorated. Huge capacity inside, cheaply decorated - with Latin American restaurant/club Floridita below which had lost its edge some time ago now...
