A new venture from the team behind Manicomio, Canto Corvino (literally 'song of the raven') is aptly situated on a lane once known as Raven Row. Exposed brickwork and industrial lighting create a warehouse vibe that appeals to City suits as well as Shoreditch hipsters, and the all-day kitchen majors on traditional dishes where cooking methods are as important as ingredients. Antipasti might include indulgently cheesy arancini packed with chilli prawns or salty salumi with focaccia, while pumpkin cannelloni with walnuts and smoked provola is a hit-the-spot pasta riff. We also like the smoky pork T-bone cooked in the Josper oven, with burnt plums adding an astringent edge, although the jellified Negroni dessert with cucumber foam is a more acquired taste. With a well-stocked cocktail bar, weekend brunch and a feasting menu for private diners, this raven has plenty to crow about.

I’d last seen him at his 27th birthday party a couple of months ago, though that barely counted as I was irretrievably off my noggin by 9:30pm and had to be carried to bed in disgrace. So, a catch-up was long overdue. Given that I live opposite a prison and James 2’s new stomping ground was just around the corner from Colombia Road’s famous flower market, we decided to spend the afternoon in East London
