With its long dark interior, old wooden floorboards, mismatching chairs, and fading sheet music lining the walls, Café Concerto reminded one reader of an intimate Amsterdam ‘brown’ bar – although
it still fits the York scene like a discreet glove. Set up by a go-getting couple in 1993, it majors on hospitable all-day food with an international slant – from breakfast to sociable suppers.
Robust soups always go down well, while hot deli sandwiches and cold baguettes come in handy for a quick fill-up. There are salads, frittata, quiches and tortilla wraps too, plus a handful of more
substantial mains such as salmon and parsley fishcakes or veggie moussaka. If something sweet is required, browse through the line-up of crumbles, flapjacks, muffins, toasted fruit bread and
assorted cakes (raspberry, cinnamon and almond for example). Be prepared to queue at peak periods.
