SquareMeal Review of Busaba Eathai Bloomsbury

Ten years, ten branches. Busaba Eathai has picked up the pace of late, but standards remain high & its regulars loyal. This chain of Thai eateries, conceived by Alan Yau, gets away with things a less sexy outfit could not: hour-long waits for a berth, no starters, no desserts, communal tables. What’s its secret (aside from the Thai calamari which has most readers in rapture)? In short, it’s ‘quick, affordable, informal & open all day’. Chic interiors, low lighting & that all-important ‘buzz’ don’t do it any harm either. There’s a feeling that portions are shrinking, but the menu of stir-fries, curries, noodles & salads still pleases most visitors. The appeal of certain dishes never diminishes – think stargazer monkfish curry, stir-fried morning glory, & pad thai with prawns, not forgetting those delectable calamari.

Nothing Special!

Booked a table for 2 at 6pm, a Monday evening.

Not greeted upon arrival.  Walked into the restaurant as a waitress walked by, looked at me and I was just about to say I have a booking, and she continued on her way.  3 members of staff standing around until I stated/raised my voice, "hello, I have a booking!"

Waitress impatient to take our order 3 times she asked if we were ready!! Food was nothing special, have had much more tastier Classic Pad Thai elsewhere.  Felt rushed and not comfortable at all.  Ate and drank within 1hr 15mins!!

Personally, the original Busaba restaurant on Store Street is the best of the three; more intimate than its Soho and Oxford Street counterparts, hardly ever a queue and outdoor seating for the warmer months. The meal on Saturday evening was faultless. A side dish of Thai calamari lived up to expectations, hot, crispy and moreish, and the main courses were each exceptionally tasty. The southern curry (braised lamb shank) was particularly enjoyable and paired with the Thai roti, incredibly filling. Service was friendly and fast without rushing us. While Busaba may lack some authenticity of other more ‘original’ Thai restaurants in London, for a good, reliable and reasonably priced meal in chic surroundings, it's very hard to beat.
