Breakfast, morning coffee and afternoon tea are just some of the options at this tourist-friendly all-day eatery spread over two levels just off the Royal Mile. Tradition rules in the dining room with its striped wallpaper, parquet floors and neatly dressed tables, while the menu moves from lunches of club sandwiches, Caesar salad or beer-battered haddock and chips to chicken liver parfait with toasted brioche, sausages with bubble and squeak, burgers, steaks and pumpkin risotto with black onion seeds. To finish, baked custard tart with raspberry-ripple ice cream or sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce should do the trick. There are also plenty of whiskies, wines, fizz and cocktails at the bar. The name references the fact that the 19th-century building was once home to the UK’s first regional newspaper, The Edinburgh Courant.
