The Belgo mini-chain (five restaurants in and around London) found fame with the Belgian favourite, moules-frites. This venue replaces what was Amalfi and is kitted out with four individually-themed eating ‘caves’. One-kilo pots of the mollusc can be ordered marinière, with Thai green curry sauce, or au poivre (green peppercorn sauce). Platters of mussels arrive topped with tomato sauce and grilled mozzarella, while Flemish influences continue with beef carbonnade, rotisserie chicken and haddock in Brugs with beer batter. Round things off with waffles, ice cream and chocolate sauce for pud. A lengthy drinks menu pays homage to Belgian beer, showcasing all sorts in its list of 52: from draught Früli Strawberry to Vedett or Trappist Chimay Rouge.
Belgo Soho has only been open a couple weeks, but they are certainly not a new family of restaurants. The original location opened in Chalk Farm in 1992 and they have a few restaurants spread throughout the city.When my husband and I visited the new Belgo location in Soho we were given a quick tour of the restaurant. The whole place has quite the industrial feel with wood, brick and stone effect walls.
