The shortest route to the Oktoberfest is not via easyJet to Munich, but through the portals of this City Road bierkeller. Inside, an air of beery jollity holds sway, & homesick Bavarians make
up a high proportion of the customers. The decor is as functional as a Theresienwiese tent, with long benches, plain tables & the blue & white Bavarian national colours much in evidence.
Beers include authentic Paulaner, Erdinger & Löwenbräu, which you can order by the two-pint ‘mass’ for maximum effect. Otherwise, try Apfelwein, a sharp cider from Frankfurt. The food ranges
from booze-friendly Oktoberfest fodder (pretzels, obazda cheese & roast chicken) to trencherman platefuls worthy of a Munich beer hall: Wiener schnitzel with chips, or a wurstplatte overloaded
with sausages, sauerkraut & mashed potato. Friendly dirndl-clad waitresses go about their work with Teutonic efficiency.
