Much of its tropical kitsch was culled during this cool cabana's 2015 reboot, and Barrio's meaner, leaner, new retro pose (all mango, cream and jungle greens) struts in like 70s police detective Shaft in Spanish Harlem. Rock up early for 'amigo hour', when drinks are pimped out at criminally low prices. Get the Barrio block party started with, say, a Malibu Stacey, The Hoodrat, Brazilian Lady (organic cachaça, passion fruit and lemon) or Ol' Dirty Bastard (a bourbon, rum and orange Old Fashioned); otherwise share the spoils from a Zombie, Paloma or Rub-a-Tub tiki punchbowl. With quesadillas, tacos, burritos and other Latino nibbles on offer, plus boog-a-loo, bossa nova, salsa, funk and soulful beats, this cool slice of Puerto Rico on Poland Street really swings.
Ok, so I never went to the old-style Barrio Soho, so I can’t compare before and after the relaunch. But I can tell you what it’s like now, having been invited to sample the new menu (both drinks and food) and soak up the atmosphere. This is totally the place to go for fun and fiesta after work – have a few cocktails and a bite to eat upstairs and then once you’re nice and warmed up you can continue the party downstairs where it has its own little dance floor.Drinkswise we tried pretty much everything they had with my favourite being the Cuba Lima which was a variation on a pisco sour.

Award-winning rum paired with award-winning chocolate? There’s no prize for assuming Barrio Soho’s recent El Dorado Demerara Rums and Rococo Chocolate pairing was a deeply flavourful success! The event saw El Dorado’s Brand Ambassador, Dean Macgregor, and Rococo’s Retail and Event Manager, Sam Smallman suggest a range of chocolate pairings to accompany El Dorado’s 12, 15 and 21 year old rums.Best rum of the night? I’m torn between the 15 Year Old Special Reserve and the 21 Year Old Special Reserve, but maybe the 21 wins by an edge (it’s no more drinkable or delicious – just more interesting and complex)....

The last time I looked at a taco with my hungry eyes on was in the searing heat of Mexico City about three years ago. Two weeks later, what I thought was an unconditional love of these tasty tortilla snacks, soon fizzled away like any other holiday romance. After one too many visits to the street-side taco stands, I needed a break… you can eat too much of a good thing but also, could anything else, anywhere else, ever compare? Despite eating more tacos than I’ll ever need in a lifetime, I have very fond memories of those tacos al pastor! To keep hold of those memories, I’ve just avoided tacos ever since that trip....
