Square Meal Review of Bar Boulud at the Mandarin Oriental ?

“Could be in New York” remarks one reader about Daniel Boulud’s sassy, eminently casual eatery in the bowels of the Mandarin Oriental hotel. An “excellent international vibe” pervades the low-ceilinged but attractive dining room, top staff deliver consistently good service “without stuffiness” and the food exceeds expectations “every time”, according to fans. A zinc-topped bar, swathes of woodwork and lots of intimate red-leather booths set the scene for an all-embracing, French-led menu that touts really good charcuterie (cured in-house), delicate crab and apple salad, shellfish platters, coq au vin, perfectly cooked steaks and some of the best burgers in town – try the luxurious ‘BB’ with braised short ribs, foie gras, truffles, confit tomatoes and horseradish mayo. To drink, the zippy worldwide wine list is matched by a roster of innovative cocktails and classics such as Long Island Iced Tea. We're also big fans of the new belt-busting Sunday brunch (£39), which gives unlimited access to a charcuterie buffet followed by the cooked-to-order likes of confit duck hash and salted-caramel waffles. In short, “an all-round brilliant place operated by real pros”

    Samphire and Salsify :: Bar Boulud

    This being his only London restaurant it’s clearly popular with the warmly welcomed locals, as when we visited on a Saturday lunchtime it was rather busy. It had a relaxed atmosphere with a slightly posher Angus Steak House feel to it...

  1. One of my top three burgers in London is Bar Boulud in Knightsbridge. French bistro style, sister of the New York place opened in 1998, relax venue, and the service is excellent. The placeBest view in the houseBut the main reason to return to Boulud was the latest addition to their menu, the BB burger. Foie gras, red wine braised short ribs, truffle, frisee, horseradish mayo, confit tomato, in a black onion seed bun. BB BurgerI was able to convinced Marisol to get the Piggie burger, pulled pork, green chilli mayo, bib lettuce, red cabbage slaw, in a cheddar bun. An then for starter we shared a steak tartare, which...

  1. Located in the basement of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Knightsbridge is Daniel Boulud’s London outpost Bar Boulud. I had lunch there just after it opened – see post Bar Boulud – Busy! Buzzy!Burgers! I enjoyed it on that visit and certainly thought about returning to try more from the Bistro inspired menu. It’s amazing to think that was over 18 months ago and I am only now returning, this time as part of a larger group.

    This visit was for lunch on a Saturday and we experienced a much less frantic environment than I remember. The ambience was actually very relaxing...

  1. Bar Boulud, for those who haven't ventured into Knightsbridge recently, is attached to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, next to the Candy Brother's white elephant luxury development on the corner of Hyde Park. And it's pretty posh, they even have a guy standing outside to open the door for you. After a host of diary clashes (mainly mine), I'd organised to dine with Dini...

    Saying it straight :: Bored at Bar Boulud.

    I’ve heard C bang on for years about Boulud in New York and how brilliant it is but I’m always a bit wary of the Ramsay-esque spread of sleb-chefs and so I hadn’t rushed to try it.

    You get there through a side entrance for the Mandarin Hotel, which is a good thing as it feels like a separate restaurant, not a hotel dining-room sort of place, at least it does when you first walk in...

    The Hungry Porker :: Bar Boulud

    Last time I was here too many White Cosmopolitans meant that the only thing to remind me of what I’d eaten were the stains on my shirt the next morning. Tonight I arrived in a slightly more sober state, determined to at least get past the starters before the drink got to work. I was immediately struck by the effortless class and charm of the restaurant, something alcohol had dulled my appreciation of last time around. The dining room has been cleverly designed so that it is split into several sections giving it a more intimate feel.

    The previous night I’d eaten at Balthazar, a grand brasserie that has tried...

    Wrap Your Lips Around This :: Bar Boulud

    Bar Boulud is the first London offering from the acclaimed Daniel Boulud, chef behind a number of restaurants across the pond including a 3 Michelin starred, self-named culinary wonder in New York. Although such lush provenance is not uncommon, I still feel hope filled tendrils curl around my brain/heart/stomach compelling me to pay a visit.

    As always, Knightsbridge is brimming with (foreign) bodies best avoided under normal circumstances, but a certain Boulud beckons and so we squeeze through a fevered throng of money-belt foisting tourists and make for the Mandarin Oriental. The restaurant is located at...

    Burgaffair :: Bar Boulud

    Bouluddy hell! What a great response for the site. We appreciate all the positive feedback so thank you all. Please keep spreading the word!
    Now, back to basics. It was Bar Boulud at the Mandarin Oriental in Knightsbridge and for a restaurant that shares its toilets with Heston Blumenthal’s Dinner restaurant we were expecting big things...
