‘Funky, fun and great food’, is one reader’s verdict on this ‘slightly chaotic’ but lovable tapas joint within the Church Street Hotel. Cured meats (including fine ibérico de Bellota jamón) are
hand carved at the central bar, and the menu mixes staples such as tortilla and croquetas with more unusual dishes that introduce the exotic flavours of the Maghreb and beyond. Seared rabbit comes
with chickpeas, cumin and Moroccan chakchouka, while a rich aubergine and coriander stew strikes a Middle Eastern note. At lunchtime, the menu heads down Mexico way with hearty burritos and tacos
alongside a reduced tapas selection – although Spain rules the wine list, which boasts some ‘really affordable and interesting labels’ and a handful of food-friendly sherries. A new basement bar
has doubled capacity at this moreish Moorish charmer.
I stumbled on Angels & Gypsies whilst passing through Camberwell, and was intrigued – the area isn’t somewhere I’d normally head as a destination, but this place looked lovely. Its the restaurant of the Church Street Hotel, and the theme runs throughout – the seats are old pews and there’s stained glass on the walls. It was pretty quiet for a Saturday lunch and I grabbed a coffee – a very good cappuccino.I pretty much looked at the menu out of curiosity – I’m meant to have stopped eating out, to save money and get thin for the impending wedding.. but the menu was so unexpectedly enticing I couldn’t resist...
