A casual and vibrant riverside spot, Alquimia works hard at carving a slice of the real Spain out of Putney – with occasional gastronomic flourishes to boot. It was opened in 2013 by a team with restaurant experience across the Spanish regions. All the tapas classics (gambas al ajillo, patatas bravas, tortilla Española) are here, along with various paellas for two; lobster paella is the house special (24-hours’ notice needed). Care is taken both in sourcing prime ingredients and in dish presentation. Red tuna tartare looks almost Japanese, arriving as a carefully constructed disc, a neat scoop of creamy guacamole on the side; fat slices of ibérica pluma (pork shoulder) are artfully adorned with red berries and apple. On our visit, a sizeable (and merry) Spanish contingent were dining – a good sign. Further incentives?: a dreamy list of sherries, all available by the glass; an all-Spanish wine list; and reasonable pricing.
Alquimia is a spruced up establishment by the river in Putney, serving vibrant, distinct and current tapas, cured meats, fish and classic Iberian dishes. The only negative is the lack of curb appeal. Apert from that, Alquimia is a very nice dining room. Last week they hosted a very entertaining Calçotada. We start the proceedings with a delicious Cava Vilarnau that came in the most beautiful bottle I've ever seen. Calçotada is an annual event in Tarragona, Catalonia.
